I tried to answer no, but I slipped and hit yes. I love rats, at least the domesticated varieties. We had two male rats, and I can honestly say that they were the most loving animals we've ever had the pleasure of caring for. I was brought up with dogs in the house, but I became allergic to them later in life, so I did the research and decided that rats would make a good pet, and it is so true. They would actually come when you call their name, and they never nipped me, even by accident. They only used their teeth for eating, not as a defense like most animals do. They are so gentle. The only bad part about having them as pets is, they don't have a long life expectancy, about 3 years.
Good question. And as long as the pet rat is kept in his cage and out of my sight, I would not freak. But, would not want to see a pet rat outside of his cage. Funny, I can look at snakes and tarantulas at the pet store, but get the heebie jeebies when I see the pet rats.
That is funny. Poor ratties, so many people hate them and have no idea how great they are. Maybe someday you will be brave enough to meet a well socialized pet rat! :-) They are super friendly, loving and smart! You can trick train them...Mine know their names and come when they are called. :-D And pet rats rarely bite. You might find an occasional one with a nipping issue, but that is most likely because it was either abused or unsocialized.
If my wife ever loses her allergies to rats, were certainly going to get another couple of Dumbos. She loved our babies so much, but every time she handled them(everyday) she would break out, and have trouble breathing, what a shame.
He's very cute, how could anybody be afraid of these great pets? I guess it's a different story when it comes to non-domesticated rats, but that's the same with almost all wild animals. As long as you give them a lot of attention, rats make the best pets, IMO. They're very social animals, and don't like being by themselves, so when we talked to the breeder, we had her save us two males from the same litter, and that worked out great!
What a cutie! I somehow ended up with 5 girlies (only wanted 3, but the other 2 ended up with me to...lol) I posted a video down below of two of them, Sandy and Bella! I love my girls. Rats are awesome!
