Sure, I'd like to think I left soon enough. Be the rugged individualist, stand out, speak up, take the road less traveled, etc. Then it hits me: I just used a string of tired, shop-worn cliches to differentiate myself. I show up at family gatherings with my ever-so-cosmopolitan dish of green bean casserole, then feign astonishment that my dish is merely 1 of 7 similar casseroles on the table. To this day I'm convinced that "Coke or Pepsi?" is actually a choice, not a reflection of my state of being.
When girls compliment me on my clothes at work, it usually goes like this: "Oh...so you DO have a polo shirt that's not striped." That's when the blanding of me becomes so clear: fashion. I take my 9 year old grandaughter to the eye doctor, and she says, regarding lens selection: "I told Mommy you were not picking out my glasses. It's pretty clear you don't know how to do that." Well, if it wasn't clear before that comment, it sure was afterwards! And it's true. When I select a frame, the only constant down through the years is that I manage to out-dork everyone else with glasses. It's my special gift, having been born in Ohio.
Note well that just because you're different does not mean you are interesting or useful.
I'd like to think I'm different, but there could be multiple people very similar to me. I'm not THAT arrogant, just close.
