After having children and seeing the complete selfishness that very small children have. I know we are born that way. Sharing, giving and caring are things we as parents must teach our children.

Children want to satisfy their own needs. It takes parents, and patience to teach a child that others have needs as well, and sometimes they must wait.

I think we are all born with an instinct for survival so I guess you might say yes, we're born to survive and if we have to be selfish to do it, we will.
I think that our parents, family members, schools, churches all contribute to tempering our instinct to survive with more of a survival of the species attitude. In other words, they teach us to care about others by caring for us, showing that they care for others and that it matters how we treat other people. I think we need more of that today.

When one of the first words kids can speak in "mine" I tend to think we are born selfish.

It's the parent's job to teach them to share and not be selfish.

I believe so; infants are surely selfish little beings. After infancy, the degree of selfishness becomes a choice.

Babies, little children are born selfish, some are more than others. Parents will have to bring them up properly to channel the selfishness into character building traits.

A baby is the definition of selfish...but we should be able to overcome that as we grow and mature.

I'm a father of 4... But those aren't character traits so much as kids just being themselves...delightful, creative, determined, and charming.

Selfishness is something children learn by being raised by liberal parents.

Maybe not, but I do believe that liberal parents tend to teach by example so their children are generous.

Sorry, hit wrong button. Answer should have been yes. Mine is a primary word with small children. Parents then have the pressure of trying to teach the share philosophy to them.

I think it's highly plausible, because usually one of the first words we learn to say is,"MINE" and we definitely understand the meaning! Sharing and being generous are traits we acquire later as we grow.
