Are These Pre-Peeled Bananas the Stupidest Grocery Store Move Ever?

I didn't think it was possible to be this stupid... but apparently, a grocery store in Germany went there. The store peeled some bananas and then wrapped them up in plastic wrapping. WHY?!?! The banana peel is nature's way of providing your fruit with protection. Le sigh.

I'm not that lazy and I wouldn't buy these; however, they did that so that they could sell the bananas that had already begun to turn brown on the outside. That's why some of them have the ends cut off too; they had probably turned brown there as well. It's a way to maximize profits and minimize waste. I suppose people would buy them to use in Smoothies or recipes.

or like most people you buy the ones that are going a bit brown for less money, rather then more.

"Most people" won't buy brown bananas even if they do lower the price. If these do cost more than regular bananas (who said they did?), then that is definitely stupid on the part of the store and the customers who buy them.

So it's actually the customers' fault for not buying the bananas with little brown bits on the peel. There is nothing wrong with those bananas, yet people don't want to buy them because they don't look perfect. That's stupid. You're supposed to eat the food, not look at it.

True. There isn't anything wrong with the fruit and it is the customer's fault. I don't blame the store for capitalizing on that attitude though.

I think it would be silly to chose the peeled ones over bananas with a lot of brown spots, they would probably be less fresh without the peel.

Actually when they start to brown on the outside is when they are best. (and best for you)
I generally won't buy bananas unless they have brown spots on them.

Good point. I would think it would have to be economically beneficial to the sellers despite the extra cost of the packaging or they wouldn't do it. I suppose they probably would need to raise the price to account for that which I do think is ridiculous on their part and, even more so, on the part of those who buy them, but who says most consumers are smart anyway? I personally don't think that there is any reason to "improve" upon the natural packaging of the banana, but I understand why the seller did it considering that the mindset of many consumers would lead them to buy something like this and/or reject the same product if it were left in it's peeling because it appears less than perfect.

The point of these is you can see they're not bruised. e.g. The skin on Dole bananas hide the bruising, unlike Chiquita which show bruising on the skin.

The peel turns brown before the fruit goes sour. Better this then thrown away.
