"Our expectations are much higher than winning seasons," Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said to the media following his team's dominant 41-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. "I'm glad we've been able to accomplish that as an organization and a football team. But believe me, it's not one of those expectations we really want to talk about. If we're where we think we are as an organization and a football team, that's expected each and every year."
The Falcons rallied behind their coach, who was reportedly experiencing chest pains throughout the week. The team made sure their coach didn't have to worry about them, as they lead the Jaguars 27-0 at halftime. At 9-5, if the Falcons keep winning, especially their final two regular season games, they will return to the playoffs for the first time since last postseason's lopsided loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.
In over four decades, the Falcons never had back-to-back winning seasons. Since drafting quarterback Matt Ryan, signing running back Michael Turner, and acquiring Coach Smith, the team has seen three straight winning seasons. Now their goal is to win a playoff game for the first time since 2004. The Falcons have to just keep winning. With a big game next Monday night against the rival New Orleans Saints, the Falcons control their own destiny.
"I can't speak to the people who came before, but I know since [general manager] Thomas [Dimitroff] and I had the opportunity to be here, we've just kind of put our heads down and gone to work," Smith said. "When you do that, good things usually happen. We are not finished, believe me. Our expectations and internal goals are much higher than having a winning football season."
