Are Baby Names Getting Too Unique?

There has been an outbreak of odd, funny, and perhaps, awful baby names in 2012. We've heard about Jay-Z and Beyonce's Blue Ivy (their daughter, not a special edition bottle of Cristal). But this year, celebs aren't the only ones favoring unusual names. Parents are now drawing inspiration from everything, including Greek literature and Game of Thrones. Yes, GAME OF THRONES!

Some of the hottest baby names, courtesy of Nameberry, include: Arya (from Game of Thrones), Caia (the half-lycan, half-witch character from Samantha Young novels), Gatsby (from The Great Gatsby), Django (the main character in an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film), and Decimus (which means tenth in Greek and was made popular by The Hunger Games, in which many of the male characters have ancient Roman names).

Don't forget about the different names we've heard in the past, such as Chris Martin and Gweneth Paltrow's daughter Apple. We think she was named after the fruit and how sweet it is--not the computer. But we could be wrong.

What do you think SodaHeads? Are celebrities and their different inspirations inventing cool, new names or are parents just trying too hard to be unique? Let us know!

Mainly because uniqueness isn't quantifiable... a thing is either unique or it isn't.

Parents seem to picking (making up!) names as extensions of their self-perceived personalities with no thought of what the child is going to have to put up with for the rest of their lives.

As an educator, it gets very hard sometimes. I once had this young lady named Nokia.Although it can be cool sometimes. My daughters names are Ayanna Rae and Makenzie. I think they are fairly simple names.

In fact, since the crazier names are more common, it just means that people are trying too hard. As a result, they all look and sound the same anyway. Often people just make up odd spellings for common names. If I have children, I'll give them old-fashioned names such as Douglas, Theodore, Katherine, or Anneliese.

We're seeing many new names in our culture due to the increased number of immigrants. Of course, giving a unique name to a child is the parents' choice but I personally don't like, for example, giving a child the name of a product. Of the names you listed, Gatsby is a great name.

Uniqueness is one thing, but I think they get a little too cutesy/weird with them, for example:

Audio Science - Son of actress Shannyn Sossamon and Dallas Clayton
Bronx Mowgli - Son of musicians Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz
Daisy Boo - Daughter of chef Jamie Oliver and wife Juliette ("Jools")
Pilot Inspektor - Son of actor Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf
Moon Unit - Daughter of singer Frank and Gail Zappa
Petal Rainbow Blossom - Daughter of chef Jamie Oliver and wife Juliette ("Jools")

    Daisy isn't all that unusual.

Aside from that, calling Frank Zappa a "singer" is selling him extremely short.

Regardless. Zappa is a man who composed multiple operas, was a virtuoso guitar player, a brilliant satirist, and possibly one of the most demanding band leaders of all time.

Singing was probably the least of his abilities.

Regardless, he was still a singer.

One of my favorite saying from Frank is:

"Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff."

Unfortunately, the title of the video ruins part of the joke (it's that much funnier if you think he's talking about Neil Young at first).

I can understand trying to be different and unique, but, Blue Ivy and, omg!, Apple, amongst other way out there names is, I guess, on the parents, I couldn't do it. Im not a traditionalist because there are just tooooooo many kids and people in the world today with the same names, so breaking away from your John's and Michael's and Mary's and such is good, my 3 youngest are named Javonnee, Lesiah and Addison, but these celebrity names are over the top.

I like the originality of recent baby names, that way you make sure that there will be very few people with the same name. In my classes at school there is almost always at least 1 person with my name in every class. My daughters name is Chloe Renee is that to unique?
  • Muskoka BReeZY!... 2012/07/15 20:04:02 (edited)
    Muskoka
That is not very unique it is simply original. Chloe is a very old name.
I agree. Many name has been over used and are completely boring
