Are Baby Names Getting Too Unique?

There has been an outbreak of odd, funny, and perhaps, awful baby names in 2012. We've heard about Jay-Z and Beyonce's Blue Ivy (their daughter, not a special edition bottle of Cristal). But this year, celebs aren't the only ones favoring unusual names. Parents are now drawing inspiration from everything, including Greek literature and Game of Thrones. Yes, GAME OF THRONES!

Some of the hottest baby names, courtesy of Nameberry, include: Arya (from Game of Thrones), Caia (the half-lycan, half-witch character from Samantha Young novels), Gatsby (from The Great Gatsby), Django (the main character in an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film), and Decimus (which means tenth in Greek and was made popular by The Hunger Games, in which many of the male characters have ancient Roman names).

Don't forget about the different names we've heard in the past, such as Chris Martin and Gweneth Paltrow's daughter Apple. We think she was named after the fruit and how sweet it is--not the computer. But we could be wrong.

What do you think SodaHeads? Are celebrities and their different inspirations inventing cool, new names or are parents just trying too hard to be unique? Let us know!

Some names can be really pretty, and if it's something that's common in someone's culture, then that's cool. But Apple and Blue Ivy? Really?

...though only for spelling that makes the name unpronounceable; put a rein on weirdness and give the rest of us a break so we're not embarrassing the child and ourselves through mispronunciation.

Parental choice does not have to traditional. I like individuality, in selection.

Really that's not unique since many close-minded people would think of a name similar to that if not that itself. To be unique it would have to be ONE OF A KIND, so you would have to be more creative than that.

    Keep it going.

I've taught school for 20 years: There isn't a known name that I would name my children now, I'll have to invent some, hahahaha!

While I agree that you shouldn't limit just to English-- going back to your cultural roots is a neat concept... when you name your kid "Apple" or "Coral" or "Blue", that isn't broadening any cultural horizons, and when you name a kid for a culture you have no connections to, it's just plain weird. Imagine a little blonde with blue eyes called "Mizuki" (a very average Japanese name). It's not telling people her roots are in Japan, it's telling people her parents were Weeaboos.
