Are Baby Names Getting Too Unique?

There has been an outbreak of odd, funny, and perhaps, awful baby names in 2012. We've heard about Jay-Z and Beyonce's Blue Ivy (their daughter, not a special edition bottle of Cristal). But this year, celebs aren't the only ones favoring unusual names. Parents are now drawing inspiration from everything, including Greek literature and Game of Thrones. Yes, GAME OF THRONES!

Some of the hottest baby names, courtesy of Nameberry, include: Arya (from Game of Thrones), Caia (the half-lycan, half-witch character from Samantha Young novels), Gatsby (from The Great Gatsby), Django (the main character in an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film), and Decimus (which means tenth in Greek and was made popular by The Hunger Games, in which many of the male characters have ancient Roman names).

Don't forget about the different names we've heard in the past, such as Chris Martin and Gweneth Paltrow's daughter Apple. We think she was named after the fruit and how sweet it is--not the computer. But we could be wrong.

What do you think SodaHeads? Are celebrities and their different inspirations inventing cool, new names or are parents just trying too hard to be unique? Let us know!

Naming children is not the problem. I know many people who teach their children to hate. They are the ones who should not be allow to have kids.

Yep, getting too unusual too. At least these celebs have beautiful children, despite the names. Blue Ivy Carter is so beautiful. bivc

Maybe they are very unique but even with non-unique names, there's always going to be people who dislike them. Besides, I've heard some people complain about names in other languages being 'too unique' and advising parents not to name their children that. That made me so angry! Just because YOU'VE never heard of it, doesn't mean it's not a good name! And Arya is a beautiful name :) Besides, every name was new and unique at one point. People will soon get used to these ones too. We have 5 Caitlins, 6 Jordans, and 12 Matt's in my grade alone. And that's only some of them. I have a name that no one else I know had and I like it that way. You're remembered more. I'd rather my child be unique rather than one among a sea of Amy's. And I don't mean to offend anyone with those names I used as examples. I actually love all those names but there really is a lot of them. :)

I love unique names, as long as they aren't completely made up with ten syllables. I know a couple who named their children Jay and Daisy since they both loved The Great Gatsby, and another who named their daughter Kahlan from Legend of the Seeker. I'm all for uniqueness, I know way too many Sarahs, Hannahs, Johns and Davids!

I have a group of 3 friends that I grew up with, and they are named Sarah, Sarah and Sara (no joke)! I think it's a really pretty name, but it gets really confusing sometimes!

It does! My step sister's name is Sarah and her grandmother's name is Sarah. Me and my step sister lived together for a while (and before that she would visit from her mom's), and they would always have to call our middle names. Lots of times her dad would be "Sarah come here!" and we are always asking "Which one?" Although we stopped asking that, because sometimes he would call both of us and whichever answered had to do some sort of chore.

My name's Sarah. It's common..get over it. That's why there are "nicknames?"
If you hate your name so much, then change it. It is possible.
People are trying so hard to come up with unique names...to the point where uniqueness is no longer unique. Don't get me wrong, I love cool sounding names, but at least have a reason why you choose the names you do.

I am planning to. I don't want a really unique name, I just want one that isn't so common I get confused with others.

a little bit of uniqueness is good, and the names in a game of thrones are all perfectly fine names, i considered naming any children i have in the future after it XD.

I do think so. They want to believe their child is unique, and with a strange name that they will also be great, but that just isn't the case. It will the actions of their child will determine if they are great or not, and not a strange name.

Not unless your name's too difficult to pronounce...then you become known as the girl/guy who has the hard-to-pronounce name, therefore I will never remember your name.

No! My first and middle name are really really common. I may keep my first name, as it's what I've always gone by, but I may change my middle. I like uniqueness.

I literally don't care what parents want to name their children
Even if the child doesn't like the name, they can always go by something else or have it changed when they're older

i think so. neomiahzackriah was my friends name... he ended up changing it when he was 26 because he didnt like it. and his name was mainly from the bible. and his uncle or somthing. so yeah there getting to unique... its like yeah go ahead and set your kid up for teasing and 4 years of misery... deciding he hasnt gotten it in middle school :|

As a person who spent the first 17 years of their life with a Thor villain as their only legal name I can safely say that uniqueness in names has its limits.

I think unique names are good (granted they aren't too absurd). It's kind of annoying when your name is really common like mine is. (My name is Britney).

So what everyone should be named John and Jane? No!

I have a friend named La-a. You know how you pronounce it? La-dash-a. That's how. And guess what? That's her birth name, the name her parents gave her, the one that's on her birth certificate. The funny thing is that's not even a dash, it's a hyphen.

I have another friend named 95-South. Not even joking. Once again, that's the name on his birth certificate. He moved here from Compton, Cali so I assume it's a REALLY ghetto thing like La-a
