Are Baby Names Getting Too Unique?

There has been an outbreak of odd, funny, and perhaps, awful baby names in 2012. We've heard about Jay-Z and Beyonce's Blue Ivy (their daughter, not a special edition bottle of Cristal). But this year, celebs aren't the only ones favoring unusual names. Parents are now drawing inspiration from everything, including Greek literature and Game of Thrones. Yes, GAME OF THRONES!

Some of the hottest baby names, courtesy of Nameberry, include: Arya (from Game of Thrones), Caia (the half-lycan, half-witch character from Samantha Young novels), Gatsby (from The Great Gatsby), Django (the main character in an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film), and Decimus (which means tenth in Greek and was made popular by The Hunger Games, in which many of the male characters have ancient Roman names).

Don't forget about the different names we've heard in the past, such as Chris Martin and Gweneth Paltrow's daughter Apple. We think she was named after the fruit and how sweet it is--not the computer. But we could be wrong.

What do you think SodaHeads? Are celebrities and their different inspirations inventing cool, new names or are parents just trying too hard to be unique? Let us know!

I think everyone wants their baby's name to be unique. But these days, people are even willing to name their babies Facebook, which is beyond weird.

I like unique names. I have a slightly unique name and I liked that there were not 6 others girls in my school with the same name.

It seems when an unusual name occurs many other parents of newborns names their child the same. There is a lot of Morgans, Destiny's, and Ansley's - where those were unusual names for girls in the past.

But I do think unique is a good thing. Some names are just ridiculous and there is the thing where the name sounds normal but is spelling all crazy.

i think too 'ridiculous' is the better word. my kids have 'unique' names in that I haven't met any other kids with their names but they're not ridiculous, in my opinion anyway.

Arya- Okay, kind of a germanic(?) sound to it
Caia- Alright, that's a bit weird but it's almost like a regular name
Decimus- Okay, but what do you say when he asks what happened to the other 9?
Merhabi- Truly the best name ever given to a child in all existence. ∞/10 Would name all of my children this regardless of insignificant things like genitalia.

I think you can call you're child what you like as long as it isn't something that's going get them bullied at school.

My son has 4 Jareds in his class, 2 Brandons, and a slew of Samanthas and Gabrielles. I'm glad I gave my kids names that are unique, so that they know when people are addressing them.

Oh, I'm not knocking the name, it's just that it is such a common one where I happen to live. I was just explaining that a lot of kids seem to have that name, so I'm glad I chose less common ones for my kids.

On the contrary, these days alot of parents seem to be naming their babies the same thing! I was looking on a baby name website the other day and just about every mother was under the impression that changing the spelling of a name and adding "lyn" or "yla" on the end made it 'unique' somehow. I wonder if they know that these days it just sounds kind of trashy.

They're not unique at all. If you named your baby after something else, then it's AUTOMATICALLY NOT UNIQUE.

Even made-up names like "Moon Unit Zappa" are not unique. Right, Soleil Moon Frye?

I guarantee there's a girl out there somewhere named Propecia.

I personally like unique names as long as they don't go over the top. I go by 'Drea' but my name is really 'Dreamer', for starters it makes it easier for people to remember you. But I guess overly dramatic names that will get you laughed at are just plain embarrassing for the parents and the poor kid.

I don't care what people name their kids...just spell the names right. If you name your child Randii, she will have to, for the rest of her life, spell her name to anyone who asks her.

I have a pretty unique name, and though it was a little irritating when I was little (no one could spell it right), I now enjoy it very much.

The names I like are unique, but not overly so (in my opinion)

    My favorite names:

    Luna (f)

    Aylin (f)

    Winter (f)

    Guinevere (f)

    Sorren (m)

    Tobias (m)

It's fun to meet people with different names - I like it when there aren't 38 Jennifers, 18 Laurens, and 6 Ashleys all in the same room! Throw in a Gatsby and Arya!

Some people suck at choosing names, but I think it's cool that people are actually trying to give their child some kind of originality. I can't tell you how many Breannas and Ashleys and Tylers I've met. Like, make an effort!

Spreaking as someone who has a really crap, normal name, I think unique names are great, but calling your kid Blue Ivy is ridiculous.
