In a case that could set a global legal precedent for granting basic rights to apes, animal rights advocates are seeking to get the 26- year-old male chimpanzee legally declared a "person."

Hiasl's supporters argue he needs that status to become a legal entity that can receive donations and get a guardian to look out for his interests.

"We mean the right to life, the right to not be tortured, the right to freedom under certain conditions," Theuer said.

"We're not talking about the right to vote here."

The campaign began after the animal sanctuary where Hiasl (pronounced HEE-zul) and another chimp, Rosi, have lived for 25 years went bankrupt.

Activists want to ensure the apes don't wind up homeless if the shelter closes.

Their food and veterinary bills run about $6,800 a month. Donors have offered to help, but there's a catch: Under Austrian law, only a person can receive personal donations.

Will the chimp be doing his own taxes, or will he go to an accountant?

Sounds like Hiasl is probably smarter than his supporters. Also who is Hiasl going to vote for in the next election?

I am sure there are plenty of ways to help this chimp.

if the chimps can set up their own legal system then maybe this one should have his case heard. why don't the activists just move the chimp.

    >"We mean the right to life, the right to not be tortured, the right to freedom under certain conditions"<

I'd say that they need to worry more about the human species obtaining these rights first.

They ought to be protected and taken care of, but they aren't people. They're chimps. Their brain structures and DNA would suggest that they will never be humans.

Just change how the laws are written so money can be directed to the chimps in peril. Find another wildlife refuse for the dear boy and girl chimp.

Seems a bit excessive to declare a chimp as a person. Couldn't they just change the donation law to allow for donations to animals or is to prevent some kind of perverse money laundering schemes?

i want to protect the monkeys, but declare them a person? We already have jack asses running this country, I can't imagine a world where chimps have human rights...

It sounds like we should probably change the status of the activist to monkey, not the other way around. I joke, but this sounds ridiculous.
