Michael Phelps came in a distant fourth place in the 400 meter individual medley. Fans and colleagues had higher expectations for Phelps, who won 16 Olympic medals. Phelps won eight Gold medals in Beijing (2008) and six Gold and two Bronze in Athens (2004). Others had less than "high" expectations for Phelps because of his lifestyle choices since 2008. The NY Times reported Phelps' drug use in 2009: The Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps, who was photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe, has lost a major sponsorship deal and has been suspended from competition for three months.

Wikipedia describes "420" as "primarily a term used in North America to refer to the consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis."

MSN.FOXSPORTS.COM reports: Michel Phelps fails to win gold in 400m individual medley. Phelps was routed by his American rival in the 400-meter individual medley, losing to Lochte by more than 4 seconds Saturday. That's not all: The winningest Olympian ever didn't win any medal at all, the first time that's happened in a race of this magnitude since he was a 15-year-old kid competing in just one event at the Sydney Games, a dozen years ago.

first off the guy was caught smoking pot which violates the rules, and second, everyone gets older and slows down. That's just the way it is. He cant't be expected to per for at the same rate through an entire decade. Man, I need a hit!

It appears that smoking pot has affected his game. It is well known that pot robs you of ambition and takes away competitiveness. Drug use has consequences.

To be very honest, I think Phelps doesn't look as if he truly wants to participate in this year's Olympic Games. I saw the race and I wondered if that was the same person who won 8 gold medals in Beijing. I know the 4 year gap is significant as far as the Games are concerned but maybe his goal was just to beat Mark Spitz in getting the most number of gold medals in swimming for the USA and call that a day.
