Would You Play a Video Game as a Gay Character?

The developer of the popular video game series Mass Effect is embracing diversity in its highly anticipated upcoming sequel, Mass Effect 3.

In the latest edition in the series, a sci-fi action adventure in which the player assumes the role of Commander Shepard, players will have the option to explore same-sex relationships with other characters in the game.

BioWare's Casey Hudson tweeted the news: "Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m/f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game."

Some aficionados of the series are questioning the change, not over an objection to homosexuality, but due to worries about potential storyline complications and inconsistencies the change could introduce.

While I personally wouldn't, I don't see why those who want to shouldn't be able to.

Games should not have "gay" characters.

"I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite nasty prison shower scene." LOL, that's from a YouTube poop. XD It's really funny what you can do when you mix up the words characters say! XD If people are worries about inconsistencies, like if Shepard acted interested in women in previous games, he could've been bisexual the whole time and nobody knew it. If I get this game, I'll paly through it three times. One to go gay, one to go straight, and one to to bi, like me! :D

Bioware can flesh out a decent character so honestly, if Commander Shepard isn't all 'in your face throw a parade for a martini' gay then it's fine.

If he is then I just wasted 3 years of my life.

I don't enjoy video games, BUT if I did play them I would want to play every kind of character that was available. What fun to be female, male, animal, vampire, werewolf, anything. I think it is like writing or acting. You can portray any character and do it well. In college I played Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and the next play was Macbeth and I played one of the witches. I was neither a 14 year of girl from Verona nor a Harpie that foretold the future, yet I had a great time acting out the part. The next time I played Lady Macbeth and helped commit murder. Needless to say, playing a gay character doesn't make you gay any more than playing Lady Macbeth made me a killer. "Out out damn spot!!!!"

why should it matter it's a game.

plus i think you just offended gay people lol
  • G 2011/05/22 00:10:03
If it's part of the overall narrative, yes. If it's a choice thing, probably not.
  • angelica 2011/05/20 21:04:10
I want to play a character that's the closest to me. I'm not gay so I don't want to play that. But it doesn't bother me there's the option!
  • 2011/05/19 14:43:56
Yup. I hope others would too. I mean, I've been playing straight characters in video games for years, and I'm not straight. I don't see how bad it could be the other way around. I'm glad video games are beginning to accept gay characters. I mean, it would be nice to have a new game where the main character was actually gay, but I understand that it probably wouldn't do well. I mean, if people have a problem with a game having just the OPTION to have same-sex relationships, a gay main character would likely hurt sales too much to be feasible.

If it was a decent game then why wouldn't I? To deliberatly not play a game because of the characters sexual orientation seems totally stupid to me, as the entire thing is a fantasy.

No one would be forced to play through the gay plot line. Sheesh. What a non-issue!
  • AgentCapitalist 2011/05/18 18:17:27
I don't think many little boys would like to do so either.

Although I doubt that the gay characters in Mass Effect will be good, as they didn't seem to pay much heed to us in the previous two games, where they promised to add gay romance options but didn't because of "time constraints".
  • Rave 2011/05/18 17:38:40
I already have in both Mass Effect and Fable, though my Fable character was bisexual technically and I secretly wished that Madison from Heavy Rain would have turned out gay, she was cute.
  • ih8uf 2011/05/18 17:27:26
and I really don't see the need to market such a game in the first place...it's one thing for adults to deal with same-sex relationships, but even though many video games are played seriously by some adults, I don't think kids need to be exposed to it, especially at young, impressionable ages...I'm not putting down gay couples, I just don't think it's appropriate for the videogame world...
  • LukeC ih8uf 2011/05/18 17:57:34
There exposed to much worse things dont you think? Murder, prostitution, theft, rape are all quite common in games.

2 things that arent very open in games are gay relationships and drugs, maybe because someone knows there wrong about these things.
  • ih8uf LukeC 2011/05/18 18:01:21
but at least the games that expose those things are rated (E, M, and whatever the others are)...I'd actually like to see parents take responsibility for what their kids are playing, and see more enforcement of sales of such games (GTA is a prime example...kids should never have been allowed to purchase it, but stores don't really care)...
  • LukeC ih8uf 2011/05/18 18:03:53
Yeah, but still theres no reason why they shouldnt have games were you get into a gay relationship or were you get to grow and smoke weed (could you imagine the demand for that game). If the people in the shop dont sell them the games they will just get someone older to buy it for them, so your right its entirely up to the parents.

Oh please, nobody prepubescent is playing games like these. By the time kids are playing games like these, I'm sure they're passed their impressional phase. My guess is that the youngest person who plays Mass Effect is either fourteen or fifteen.

It's really getting to be to much. You would think it's the only thing in the world, I'm really fed up with it.
  • Bob DiN 2011/05/19 14:36:13
Wow, all they said was that it would be an option. They didn't say that the main character would be gay, they said you would be allowed to have a same-sex relationship if you wanted to. And please stop complaining about 'this gay crap' being shoved down your throats. It's not. However, gay gamers have been having 'straight crap' shoved down their throats for years, because so few games have anything other than heterosexual relationship options.
