Nothing against Scarlett Johanssen, but the character of Lisbeth Salander depends greatly on her physical appearance and her discomfort with her own physical appearance. She's not SUPPOSED to be sexy or voluptuous - she's insecure about her own appearance and compensates in part by having a tougher attitude. I can't imagine Scarlett Johanssen looking insecure about her own appearance.
Just my humble opinion.
Would Scarlett Johansson Have Been 'Too Sexy' for 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'?

David Fincher's film adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" drew the attention of some of the biggest names in Hollywood, from Johnny Depp and George Clooney to Scarlett Johansson. and Ellen Page. While Fincher did end up giving the lead male role to a big name (Daniel Craig, our current James Bond), the female role went to a lesser-known actress named Rooney Mara -- even though Fincher says Johansson's audition was excellent.
His reason: Scarlett Johansson is just too hot.

Fincher recently told Vogue, "Scarlett Johansson was great. It was a great audition, I'm telling you. But the thing with Scarlett is, you can't wait for her to take her clothes off ... I keep trying to explain this. Salander should be like E.T. If you put E.T. dolls out before anyone had seen the movie, they would say, ‘What is this little squishy thing?' Well, you know what? When he hides under the table and he grabs the Reese's Pieces, you love him! It has to be like that."
An odd comparison, but OK. Still... Mara isn't exactly "E.T." here. The 26-year-old actress, probably best known for her role as Mark Zuckerberg's girlfriend at the beginning of "The Social Network," is actually very pretty. Sure, she looks a little alien in the promotions, but that's after makeup and hair.

It's not like Patty Jenkins picked Charlize Theron to play Aileen Wuornos in "Monster" because she looked like her. That took work. If he had gone with Die Antwoord rapper Yo-Landi Vi$$er, whom he reportedly approached with the film early on in the process, it would have made a little more sense.

Take both (if you can afford them) and give them different roles.
Rooney is not only a great actress, but she also fits the role perfectley.
I still don't get why they made an american version?
Lisbeth Salander
*lolz
Did you read the whole series, by any chance?
