From the biggest of Hollywood blockbusters like The Hunger Games to made-for-TV movies like HBO Films' Game Change,
Woody Harrelson manages to find himself in a bit of everything. And
deservedly so since the actor almost always delivers a compelling
performance, including his current work as Haymitch Abernathy in the
first of what is sure to be a mammoth three feature franchise. For his
next role, Harrelson is in negotiations to star opposite Christian Bale
and Casey Affleck as the villain in the crime drama Out of the Furnace.
Variety reports that Harrelson is close to signing on to Scott Cooper's followup to Crazy Heart.
The writer-director's debut nabbed Jeff Bridges his first Oscar but
this new film sounds far different than that tale of a worn and weary
country singer. Written by Copper and Brad Ingelsby, Out of the Furnace
is about a pair of brothers (Bale and Affleck) trying to make a name
for themselves in the Rust Belt. When unfortunate circumstances put
older brother Christian in prison, Casey winds up running with the wrong
crowd, headed by Woody Harrelson. Without going into too much detail,
let's just say that when big brother gets out of prison, he comes
looking to make things right and violence is all but assured.
Out of the Furnace also includes Zoe Saldana as Christian Bale's
love interest, and the amazing Sam Shepard in the role of the boys'
uncle. Relativity Media's crime drama was originally a star vehicle for
Leonardo DiCaprio who remains on board the project as a producer
alongside his Appian Way partner Jennifer Killoran. Joining Appian as
producers on Cooper's sophomore effort are (and there are many big
names) Scott Free's Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Michael Costigan, as
well as Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh (who produced Bale to that Best
Supporting Actor Oscar in The Fighter). Not a bad group of producers to round out an excellent creative team. Production on Out of the Furnace is scheduled to begin later this month.
