... and I wouldn't expect anyone who knows me to do that if I ever got leukemia.

Such gestures, while well-meaning, only amount to symbolism over substance.

One person would have a shaved head. The other would still be just as sick as they were before.

My boyfriend of 4 years's mom got diagnosed with breast Cancer on friday. I have been growing out my hair for 9 years and I chopped a bunch off and gave it to the wig shop and then gave it to her. Didn't have to shave my head...

I never really got how that shows support. "Here, let my shinny skull remind you of what yours looks like!" It may be selfish, but my hair is mine. I'll donate money to charities, I'll give a sick friend a shoulder to lean on, but my hair stays on my head.

I wouldn't need to be asked, I'd just go ahead and do it. But I'd also try to raise some sponsorship money by doing it to donate to a Leukaemia charity
