Will 'The Wizard of Oz' Make a Good TV Show?

"The Wizard of Oz," a 1939 musical film based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," was a box office failure when it came out. But it was still nominated for six Oscars, won two of them, and went on to be regarded as one of the best movies of all time. Historian John Fricke owes a large part of the movie's legendary status to television, asserting that annual telecasts made it something of a tradition in America. Now E! wants to bring the magic back to the small screen with a scripted drama called "Dorothy."

Here's how the network describes it: "Inspired by the book 'Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz,' a girl from Kansas City falls for a man and moves with him to the Emerald City to work at his Emerald Hotel. From writer Natalie Krinsky ('Gossip Girl,' 'Grey's Anatomy') and Warner Horizon Television." We assume they intended to reference the 1908 L. Frank Baum book, "Dorothy and The Wizard in Oz," the fourth book in the series. In any case, do you think Baum's "Wizard of Oz" classic will make a good television show?

It's a Classic. You shouldn't try to redo a classic. Especially when it's a classic for almost every single person in America, probably. Especially if it's being done with new scripts, new everything. It might be ok if it was the original movie split up into a mini-series, but an entirely new show? No. Shows based off of movies always suck. At least to me.

Have we really reached a point where there are no new ideas left? Everything is either a remake or based of an original or a flat out copy.

Yup, todays writers are from hungar. They can't be creative enough like years ago so they copy.

Agreed. The shows stink, the old reruns are better.

It all depends on who the writers are, There's more Oz stories than just that one, and some of them are even better than the one that made the place famous, but will adaptations be faithful to the original author's dream? The Sci-Fi series while being very entertaining and imaginative, I feel was FAR from the quality Frank Baum would have wanted, of course it wasn't written for children either.

while I'd like to see a series, I wouldn't want to see the legend of Oz ruined by a writer that thinks he or she can improve on the original...

It wouldn't be as good as the book, but I wouldn't mind seeing one anyway, though maybe more faithful to the book though

Part of the charm is the uniqueness and "old fashioned" script and effects. A new show is doomed to failure.

Just leave it alone. There are plenty of other things that can be made into tv shows, I don't understand why as a society we seem to be stuck in a rut of redos.

Tin Man was awesome - but that was more of a steampunk version of one of the other books.
But the concept for this show makes it seem awful.

Why mess up the original idea, that's like saying let's make Gone With The Wind into a TV show, NO WAY, LET THE GREAT MOVIES REMAIN GREAT MOVIES OF THE PAST.

Just plain wrong, wrong, wrongo! Why the urge to make everything over? Could it be greed? Retro material has a built-in audience; are producers just hoping to cash in?
Let's leave this "institution" alone, and lets continue to give coming generations of kids the opportunity to watch Dorothy and her misfit pals (+ TOTO) once a year with their parents!

Providing that they are using other books in the series and not trying to rehash the movie it could be good. However as I don't own a television I will not be watching it anyway. So I guess my opinion does not really matter.

It was a box office failure because the people back then had no imagination. They would go to the theater to watch a news reel.

My ancestor, W.W. Denslow, illustrated "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" as well as "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and I grew up loving the movie. When I was little, I was terrified of The Wicked Witch of the West. We had to fast-forward through the parts with her, but I had seen the movie so much that I still knew everything she did. Every year until I was seven, my cousins, my brother and I would dress up as The Cowardly Lion, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and Dorothy for Halloween.I was sad when Karl Slover died. I don't believe the hanging munchkin myth.I know the classic movie in and out. I just don't think that Dorothy would be gregarious enough to have a boyfriend, and she's too old-fashioned to be a woman with a job. She's not from Kansas City. She's a farm girl. And there are just so many little details in the movie that mean so much, and the show wouldn't want to use all of it. I'm also a bit worried that they didn't mention Toto. They didn't even quote the book correctly. Don't get me wrong. Many Wizard of Oz-inspired ideas have been wonderful and payed homage to the beautiful classic, and it's possible that I'm totally wrong and this will be something Baum would have been proud to inspire, in fact I've heard wonderful things about "The Wiz", but I just don't think E! will ...

I guess I just don't want to see anyone but Garland as Dorothy, because it's such a difficult role, and I'm afraid they'll ruin it. But I do wish E! the best, and I certainly hope this turns out as wonderfully as the original did.

Only if the original movie is broken up and shown in 30 minute time slots.

Even Michael Jackson could not improve 'The Wizard of Oz' with his movie 'The Wiz'

It just needs some sex and violence! The show could work if the cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the Jersey Shore and the house lands next to Snooki's!

Not every classical movie needs to be made into a show. They would change it too much! Gosh.
