Will 'The Wizard of Oz' Make a Good TV Show?

"The Wizard of Oz," a 1939 musical film based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," was a box office failure when it came out. But it was still nominated for six Oscars, won two of them, and went on to be regarded as one of the best movies of all time. Historian John Fricke owes a large part of the movie's legendary status to television, asserting that annual telecasts made it something of a tradition in America. Now E! wants to bring the magic back to the small screen with a scripted drama called "Dorothy."

Here's how the network describes it: "Inspired by the book 'Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz,' a girl from Kansas City falls for a man and moves with him to the Emerald City to work at his Emerald Hotel. From writer Natalie Krinsky ('Gossip Girl,' 'Grey's Anatomy') and Warner Horizon Television." We assume they intended to reference the 1908 L. Frank Baum book, "Dorothy and The Wizard in Oz," the fourth book in the series. In any case, do you think Baum's "Wizard of Oz" classic will make a good television show?

Leave the original alone. Every sequal or modification sucked. "Wicked" was good but that was a completely different production. Let's not ruin the original by trying to make a few buck on a TV show.

I do love the original but it's a classic. I hate it when ppl mess with the classics. They should be honored by watching them for generations, not changed to make a stupid unoriginal tv series tht is only made to gain profits from.

Not unless they replace the Wizard with Federal Handout Guy, who gives everyone whatever they want or need... although Brains, Hearts and Do-Overs will be rare indeed.

First what would the TV Show be about? TV Shows have a plot. It's gonna be hard turning this movie into a TV Show.

The reason being is that there are ZERO TV shows now that aren't PC or denigrate everything good and wholesome from a morality standpoint.

The crap that Hollywood churns out these days under the guise of "family entertainment" comes straight out of a very foul sewer pipe.

Example ABC's Good Christian Bitches. ABC, is owned by Disney. Remember that the next time you are planning a vacation.

I'd be careful when dealing with a classic so many people love.

If they were to do it, they should stick close to the source material.

Can't today's writers come up with original ideas instead of trying to adapt or remake everything from their childhoods?

Oh lord Buddha, save us from Hollywood morons, who haven't had an original thought in their lives, and make movies and shows out of vintage movies and comic books. May they share that special torture in hell that the man who coined "New and Improved" will suffer for 10,000 years.

It's a great movie; made into a few good cartoon specials; poked fun at in comedies and commercials; and it was even made into four silent movies from 1912 to 1924, long before it made into the 1939 classic blockbuster movie we've all come to and love-don't ruin it by making it into a tv show.
That reminds me. CBS used to air THE WIZARD OF OZ every year in the month of March from 1956 until the mid 1990s. Now the network doesn't air it anymore. It's no longer an annual telecast. The WIZARD OF OZ is now on other cable networks but on many times of the year and at hours when peole are asleep. It's an American tradition that's now gone, as are many traditions in this country. How did it happen and why.

I seem to remember it being shown around thanksgiving time when I was a kid. but, it's a little foggy. Do you remember that?

I think that the tradition of showing particular films at particular times of the year went into decline when VHS tapes & DVD's became popular. People probably stopped watching because they can now watch it anytime they want, without commercials.

I recently started my own tradition of re-watching all the Christmas specials that i used to watch as a kid

I was pretty young, maybe 8 or 10. that would have been in the mid to late 70's.
    Again, I could be wrong.

Part of me wishes that I could say yes to this one. Sadly, so many post 1939 attempts at Oz for both the Cinema and Television have failed consistently over the years. L. Frank Baum's own prior silent versions also lost money when they were released. Broadway's "Wicked" has been the ONLY exception to this! Perhaps a successful TV show or Cinematic version could be made of that story.

When I look at the cover photo for "Tin Man," I can't help but see the germ of an idea for Zooey Deschanel's current Fox show "New Girl." Too funny!!

How about the RETURN TO OZ cartoon special from the 70s starring Liza Minelli as the voice of Dorothy; and Danny Thomas as Tin Man; Milton Berle as the Cowardly Lion; Ethel Merman the Wicked Witch of the West; Paul Lynde as Pumpkinhead etc? That was a pretty good cartoon version of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Remember that?

Maybe all the people in charge of programming never saw the original movie. They are mostly 30-40 yr olds who have no original ideas, so they borrow from the classics & rewrite them as they think they should've been done originally.

It would just be made by the network politically correct squad and screwed up leave it alone. what freaking next a weekly Gone With the Wind hour? Trouble with these mopes running networks and making movies anymore they think THEY can make it better than the early guys did yea right. Guess what A-list stars, hi-tech computer animation & big funded budgets aren't a slam dunk for a good movie or TV show.
  • bt sedlock Callaway 2012/05/02 04:15:58

Why was THE WIZARD OZ a box office failure?
  • Callaway bt sedlock 2012/05/02 07:15:07

No but most any of these "re-makes" of great movies or for that matter classic TV shows really don't do justice to the originals and are done for nothing more than a cheesy money grab trying to cash in on the classics.
