Will Smith Slaps Kissy Reporter: Did He Go Too Far or Not Far Enough?

At the Moscow premiere of “Men in Black 3” a Ukrainian reporter got a little too affectionate with Will Smith and earned himself a backhand to the face.

According to E! Online, the incident started when a television reporter asked Smith for a hug and the actor obliged. But when the man tried to go in for a kiss on the lips, Smith angrily pushed him away. Smith then exclaimed—“Hey man . . . What the hell is your problem, buddy?"—and lightly slapped the man’s face with the back of his hand. TMZ later reported that the Ukrainian reporter has done this kind of thing before. Apparently, kissing celebrities is his shtick.

Smith seemed to recover quickly after the unwanted advanced. In the red carpet footage taken just seconds after the incident, Smith was seen smiling and joking with reporters. “Hey, sorry, he tried to kiss me on the mouth,” he said. “That joker, he's lucky I didn't sucker punch him.”

Reactions to Smith’s behavior have been mixed. Some people feel that he was out of line when he slapped the reporter. Others feel that he was a good sport and didn’t go far enough.

What do you think SodaHeads? Did Will Smith take things too far with the kissy reporter? Or not far enough?

If we're all honest here, anybody would have done the same thing (male or female) and it would have been justified.

On the lips? No, a kiss on both cheeks. Not the lips. It's acceptable if it's family, such as kissing your children. You don't goto Moscow and expect a man to greet you by kissing you on the lips. He clearly accepted the 2 kisses on the cheek "when in rome", but when the guy went for the lips, they weren't in rome anymore.

It wasn't their custom. It was just something that guy liked to do. He had done it to several other celebs, as well.

Ignorant and rude. In Russia a kiss on the cheek is a traditional greeting. Plus, Smith already pushed him away- the slap was not necessary. Although I'll bet that the reporter knew that in the USA strange people do not exchange kisses as greetings!

The cheek. He kissed him twice on the cheeks then went for the lips. This is not a traditional greeting.

Men kissing is a norm in some parts of the world, I don't know if that was the case here but considering that it is common in some places and he is an international celebrity, he should handle things with more grace than that, shtick or not. Will has always allegedly been a dbag about homosexuality.

Has nothing to do with homosexuality. If Will was a woman, and a guy kissed her on the lips without her permission, he'd deserve to get slapped by her. Same thing applies.

Is it the norm to grab a guy and kiss him over and over and on the mouth? He tried to push him away but he kept coming. Even if Will was gay he would've been pissed. Allegedly a dbag? He supports gay marriage...

"if anybody can find someone to love them and to help them through this difficult thing that we call life, I support that in any shape or form."-Will Smith

Anyone would have reacted the same way and he was even more poised about it because right after he went back to doing interviews and everything like normal. Some people wouldn't have just brushed it off like that.

Reporters and paparazzi seem to forget that celebrities are people too, they are entitled to privacy and most generally want it with the exception of the kardashians and those like them.

If I was a celeb I'd probably slap someone too, because reporters and paparazzi go too far. Plus it was just a little slap it's not like he held the man down and went to town slapping him.

You can't let strangers kiss you, you never know where their lips were beforehand, so giving him a backhand was ok. Its better than a punch. Which is what most Americans would of done!

This has nothing to do with being Homophobic. He tried kissing 'Smith' in the mouth. I would of reacted the same no matter who it was.

It was a nice little back hand, they made it sound like he really back handed him, that was just a little, get out of my face hit.

Idk what the proper introduction is in Ukraine, but anyone should know that that's not how it is in America.

Russians men do kiss each other for many approving reasons. Maybe Will just over reacted, but then the reporter must know that Americans just don't let a stranger run up and kiss them.

Don't think so, what I see throughout Russia and the old world countries (Europe) are a smack on each cheek. Can be congratulatory, things like haven't seen you in a long time or the kiss of death. This reporter was all over Will's face with kisses. lol. Was the whole thing set up for publicity?

Consider this for anyone who says he went "too far". A light tap on the face is nothing compared to someone invading your personal space with a kiss on the mouth. If someone just walked up to you and tried to kiss you, you'd want to react the exact same way.

I wouldn't want someone I don't know trying to kiss me and what else could he do at the time? He could just stand there and let him kiss him. I would have slapped him too! Plus he only gave him a light slap if he wanted to be rude he could have full out punched the guy. Most guys would have broke the guys nose, I respect Will Smith and his decision. :)

Ohhh I get it.......the men over there do kiss each other on both sides of the cheek, it is totally non-sexual and a part of their culture....I thought it was an American reporter. The reporter was likely overjoyed to see him in person, and tried to welcome him in the way the men of his culture greet each other, especially when they are friends.

I believe a same sex embrace & kiss to each cheek is customary in parts of Europe. But I do not believe it was called for in this situation. It looked to be a token slap to me, blown out of context by the media as if it was a big brawl.
