Will Sidney Crosby Return in 2012?

It's been a rough road for Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who is arguably the most popular player in the National Hockey League. While many NHL players celebrated the holidays with friends and family, Crosby did so with a dark cloud over his career. It's been nearly a year since he suffered a severe concussion during NHL play.

Many months later, it looks like he still may be out for sometime, despite trying to play late this year. He last played December 5. Crosby's team has been mum about the effects of his concussion that he still suffers from to this day -- until now. Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review spoke to Crosby's teammates and coach about the delicate situation -- including the possibility of an early retirement for the face of hockey.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it," Niskanen said. "There is always that scare, guys out there like Marc Savard, who probably aren't coming back. It's always a possibility." Goalie and close friend Marc-Andre Fleury added: "I see him [Crosby] every day. I know I want him to come back soon, to feel good, to be healthy. For him, and for his health, hopefully he does come back soon."

Until further updates, the Penguins will have to play on without Crosby and they, along with everyone involved in hockey -- the league, coaches, players, fans -- can only hope the best for his recovery and career.

He should take the rest of the season off and more if needed. You cant rush healing. This is a serious injury.

But they might be a little more intelligent in how they play him. Putting him back in on his line, and playing him as you normally would does not sound like a smart thing to do, which is what they did. If head injuries were understood better it would be one thing, but they are not, and care needs to be taken.

Gary Bettman is not banning head injuries, or any injuries, even though the dead bodies have been piling up.

This is one of the many reasons why he is hated on both sides of the border.

How does one "Ban" a head injury.....or ANY injuries for that matter?

What I mean by that is stiffening punishments for a hit to someone else's head.

I know. But I think the Penguins organization could have eased him back into playing in games. Head injuries are poorly understood so you would think the amount of caution would be greater with any player, let alone one the franchise is based upon. Just does not seem like it was well thought out.

As far as the league, they would be better served to helping hockey players play hockey. Goons and fighting are what they are, but neither needs to be protected; it is not like if they vanished that hockey would become something else, it would still be hockey.

I think they were in a bit of a rush to bring him baack. I mean, what if Sidney was just any ordinary player? They'd take their time with him.

Right. I think also, Sidney wanted to play just like he did before the injury (logging just as many minutes on the ice), and someone has to say no, and ease him back into it. The bottom line is head injuries are poorly understood, and can be career ending. A healthy Sidney has 10 to 15 years (if not more) of NHL playing time, and if it takes him sitting out most or all of a season, then so what. The other part of course is the "don't be a wimp" thing. With a physical injury it is pretty much understood how to get back to 100%, and the tests to figure out where someone is at, but with head injuries it is a big unknown. It is just plain stupidity to risk 15 years of someone's career to "get them back in", even if that is what they want.

But not for Friday's game vs NY Rangers.
I think he should take the season off. A grade 3 concussion is nothing to mess with.
I'm surprised he played at all this season. I saw the game where he came back. He was AMAZING!!!

My answer is a hopeful one, but I can't say that i'm surprised that he is still having troubles. It was stupid on his part to ignore the doctor's advice after taking that hit in the Winter Classic and not stay out a week as probably was recommended. Instead, he plays again and gets hit again. Not very smart.

As a long time Pens fan, I have seen the Pens have good times and bad, and I still love them, so even if Sid retires I think the Pens still have the potential to be one of the dominating forces in the league.

Would you want him to get hurt so bad that its career ending?
I'm a Rangers fan living in Pitt and have gotten to see him play.
Even I can say he's amazing. I'd hate to see him off the ice so young.
Give him another year than come back healthy.

No. I am actually thinking Sid is finished. The way he approached his return following the first concussion showed the mark of someone who put his health ahead of his career. I don't think he is going to risk more and even greater brain damage by coming back, especially if the symptoms persist for any amount of time.

I for one will applaud his decision. Much as I enjoy watching Sid play, I would not wish to see him suffer for the sake of the fans or for the revenues of the league. He has made his mark, he has a secure future financially... hang up the skates and enjoy your life Sid

Sadly, I think no. Not in the regular season anyway. He won't be on the ice until he is 100% symptom free, which won't be for awhile. I bet we see him make an appearance in the playoffs though.
