Will Manny Pacquiao Lose Fans Due to Gay Marriage Comments?

Boxing great Manny Pacquiao is back in the headlines -- and no, it's not for his never-ending feud with top-ranked boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather (although most of us still want to see that fight.) This week, Manny Pacquiao -- politician, not boxer -- has made headlines for his opposing views on the hot-button issue of gay marriage.

Pacquiao was asked about gay marriage by The National Conservative Examiner and the boxer, who is extremely religious and currently serves as a congressman in The Philippines, said he is clearly against it. He cited the Bible and said that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Also, in an interview with MMAFighting.com in 2010, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum insulted the sport of mixed martial arts, making the controversial comments “they [the MMA fighters] roll around the floor like homosexuals.” Pacquiao may have already started to alienate a part of his fan base then.

The point of mass marketing an athlete is to have them appeal to all races, all cultures, all religions, etc. With Pacquiao's comments, he brings publicity he probably doesn't want -- or need -- at this time, especially with a big fight on the horizon. Just because fans may not be too familiar with Bradley, it certainly doesn't mean he can't win. Anything can happen in the boxing ring and while Manny Pacquiao the boxer will likely show up on June 9, there's no guarantee those fans that he alienated will.

I'm pissed about this whole situation. Everyone else shouts loud and stands up for the lifestyles and choices they choose, but every time a Christian stands up for our values we are ostracized. We already know that that comes with the territory but I feel that if corporations, people, and stores are going band Christians for our views Christian needs to Boycott their merchandise and businesses. I know I am and will continue to.

And yet you have no problem with thousands of unborn babies being hacked to death in their mother's womb.
    Strange.

If you're referring to abortion, what does that have to do with anything? We're talking about gay marriage. You're using abortion as a red herring.

Oh? Tell me brother why your profile reads "Christian" then!

What are you willing to defend with all your heart, mind, soul and life? Apparently not Christ!

My opinion and my view of the world is dictated by my faith...I have a constitutional right to that, I have an existential right to that and as long as there is breath in my lungs I will proclaim it!

Your disbelief does not undermine, erode, dismantle, effect, change, disprove or carry any weight against my faith. I forgive your judgement of me but I pray you seek your own heart before starting to point fingers at those you claim to be brethren to.

Grace to you, Glory to God!

He probably will simply because people pander so much to gay people these days. Listen, gay is a sexual orientation--nothing like race or color. Therefore I don't particularly believe it needs to be any political priority. Also look at marital success rates, and tell me how can it possibly be any better for gays should marrriage between them become widely accepted. Just sayin. There are TONS of STRAIGHT people who shouldn't be getting married.

Sexual orientation is something you are born with. You cannot change it. It is exactly like skin colour.

Then what is bisexuality...? Sexual orientation is something DISCOVERED, not born with.

Religion is a personal choice - something you decide to follow - not at all like race or color. Therefore, you have no need of religious rights.

It's just the concept of not being able to do something. I mean, say someone told you that you couldn't play tennis ever. Maybe you don't even like tennis. But wouldn't it piss you off that someone was keeping you from doing something for no reason whatsoever?

Manny should not even think about off-the-wall garbage such as this . . . He should just read his Contract, sign-it, and then go about his business.

People love sports figures despite their ignorant fealty to a mythological fairy tale book. I suspect the same will hold true for Mr. Pacquiao.

Most of his fans are aware he's FIlipino, and they're about 85% Roman Catholic there.
Whether or not you agree with him, it's precisely what you would expect him to say.

And... that's the crux of the biscuit, right there! First thing that came to my mind.
And I expect a LOT of the Black and Hispanic fighters feel the same, though they'll never have occasion to announce it.

He just stated what he believes to be true. If people can publicly pronounce they're in favor of it....shouldn't people be able to express how they feel about it without persecution.

No bashing here, he merely expressed his beliefs....and mine.

He didnt bash gay marriage he just said he doesn't believe in it. He is allowed to that opinion and in boxing there really is no such thing as bad press. I can understand his stance on the matter at hand and it is not like he is a politician running for office here in the states.
