Will Manny Pacquiao Lose Fans Due to Gay Marriage Comments?

Boxing great Manny Pacquiao is back in the headlines -- and no, it's not for his never-ending feud with top-ranked boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather (although most of us still want to see that fight.) This week, Manny Pacquiao -- politician, not boxer -- has made headlines for his opposing views on the hot-button issue of gay marriage.

Pacquiao was asked about gay marriage by The National Conservative Examiner and the boxer, who is extremely religious and currently serves as a congressman in The Philippines, said he is clearly against it. He cited the Bible and said that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Also, in an interview with MMAFighting.com in 2010, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum insulted the sport of mixed martial arts, making the controversial comments “they [the MMA fighters] roll around the floor like homosexuals.” Pacquiao may have already started to alienate a part of his fan base then.

The point of mass marketing an athlete is to have them appeal to all races, all cultures, all religions, etc. With Pacquiao's comments, he brings publicity he probably doesn't want -- or need -- at this time, especially with a big fight on the horizon. Just because fans may not be too familiar with Bradley, it certainly doesn't mean he can't win. Anything can happen in the boxing ring and while Manny Pacquiao the boxer will likely show up on June 9, there's no guarantee those fans that he alienated will.

I'm pissed about this whole situation. Everyone else shouts loud and stands up for the lifestyles and choices they choose, but every time a Christian stands up for our values we are ostracized. We already know that that comes with the territory but I feel that if corporations, people, and stores are going band Christians for our views Christian needs to Boycott their merchandise and businesses. I know I am and will continue to.

Honey I never mentioned size. Mayweather to me is just a better fighter, his work out regime is something I have never seen. My family is full of fighters, I have been around them all my life from brothers to uncles.. I have watched them both fight, Mayweather is faster, stronger and more skilled.. Pacman refuses to take the test, who knows what juice he is using to fight...

Tell me one thing, why do you think pacman wont take the test? Its really very simple...

    money mayweather

They asked him what he thought he didn't come out and hold a news conference and say he opposed it. So therefore the media made it his business. Or better yet they got into his business

I agree they got into his business. But he then took it farther, he didn't have to say anything be he did. That's when he became a homophobic jerk. Who really needs to ask himself how are these people hurting me? They aren't. You still get paid for fighting, weather they are gay or not. So that part in really none of his business. But I'm not the least be surprised.

I don't support gay men adopting children. Does that make me a homophobic jerk or a statistically aware jerk?
  • painted... uninfor... 2012/05/17 21:48:53

    Why not?
  • uninfor... painted... 2012/05/18 03:03:23

Because the likelihood that the child will be intefered with is statistically greater with gay men.

Where is your proof of that?

Almost all sex crimes against children are committed by men.
Up to one-third of all sex crimes against children are committed against boys.
Gays make up a tiny minority of the population. (Anti-gay opponents typically cite a figure somewhere between 1% and 3%.)
Therefore, gay men are committing a disproportionate share of sexual crimes against children.

Most people that don't believe in gay marriage have a problem with just the marriage of two same sex couples. They have a problem with same sex couples adopting children. Who are they hurting? Truly? No money is coming out of your pocket. Why is so hard to see that people just want to be able to be happy, without being judged. Children that are adopted, don't care. They just want to be loved, to have a home. And if two men or two women can give that to them. Then I say more power to them. And the best of luck. As far as the myths about gay men being more likely to molest their adopted children. It is just that a myth. Look it up. There is no proof.

I'm not sure that many people really care what he thinks. Plus...something tells me he may be voicing an opinion based on his own fears of being gay. Just saying.

I think that the old adage of "if you don't support the gays it is because you are secretly gay" is well and truly dead. That piece of propaganda only worked for a short while and mostly only with stupid people.
  • TC1116 uninfor... 2012/05/22 04:24:05
    TC1116
So your argument is what? That people care what he thinks? That people who make negative comments about "homosexuals" aren't in fear of their own sexuality, which is why they act out? Which was propaganda - what he said or what "I" said? I think you believe that you said something intelligent and meaningful. Unfortunately, no one would know from what you wrote. The only thing "well and truly dead" - is what you wrote. NEXT!
