Will Manny Pacquiao Lose Fans Due to Gay Marriage Comments?

Boxing great Manny Pacquiao is back in the headlines -- and no, it's not for his never-ending feud with top-ranked boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather (although most of us still want to see that fight.) This week, Manny Pacquiao -- politician, not boxer -- has made headlines for his opposing views on the hot-button issue of gay marriage.

Pacquiao was asked about gay marriage by The National Conservative Examiner and the boxer, who is extremely religious and currently serves as a congressman in The Philippines, said he is clearly against it. He cited the Bible and said that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Also, in an interview with MMAFighting.com in 2010, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum insulted the sport of mixed martial arts, making the controversial comments “they [the MMA fighters] roll around the floor like homosexuals.” Pacquiao may have already started to alienate a part of his fan base then.

The point of mass marketing an athlete is to have them appeal to all races, all cultures, all religions, etc. With Pacquiao's comments, he brings publicity he probably doesn't want -- or need -- at this time, especially with a big fight on the horizon. Just because fans may not be too familiar with Bradley, it certainly doesn't mean he can't win. Anything can happen in the boxing ring and while Manny Pacquiao the boxer will likely show up on June 9, there's no guarantee those fans that he alienated will.

I'm pissed about this whole situation. Everyone else shouts loud and stands up for the lifestyles and choices they choose, but every time a Christian stands up for our values we are ostracized. We already know that that comes with the territory but I feel that if corporations, people, and stores are going band Christians for our views Christian needs to Boycott their merchandise and businesses. I know I am and will continue to.

He's a brilliant boxer. I find his comments cringe worthy. I liked Tyson as a boxer but as a person I think he's an animal. They are fighters not diplomats.

He has a right to his opinion. One must respect him for standing up for what he believes rather than pandering to the political correctness trend.

I don't think so. He's entitled to his opinion however silly it may be. It's Arum that's the major jackass.

Yup, silly. Religions do not have the copyright or exclusive rights to the word "marriage" and denying anyone the same rights as others is bigotry as well as being intolerant and oppressive.
I used the word "silly" because I was being nice. I could have used the word "foolish" instead. But, Manny does have the right to express his opinion, the same as anyone else.

So? The vast majority used to think the planet was flat and the universe revolved around it, too.

Not that many gay couples get married anyway, do they ? Look how many straight couples living together aren't married. How many couples are twice or thrice divorced?? It's all more crap for people to stick their noses into when they should not. If your a Christian and you hate it so much-Do what Jesus said> pray for oneanother even your enemies. You can't change the world- be IN it but not OF it ! DONT JUDGE others

Pacquiao scrambled to correct the record in an interview with "Extra" host Mario Lopez, saying, "To the gay community, I apologize. My favorite verse is 'Love one another as you love yourself. Love your neighbor.' So I love everybody!"(1) To the Associated Press, "It's in the Bible: Do not judge. I'm not judging."(2) Finally, his statement: "I’m not against gay people. I have a relative who is also gay. We can’t help it if they were born that way."(3) What's more, according to reports, Nike, the target of our action, also issued a statement: "Any recent remarks made by Manny Pacquiao reflect his personal views. Nike is strongly opposed to discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of GLBT individuals."

I think most Americans are against gay marriage...I think the left winged media is lying to us about how close they say the issue is...the media says it's 50/50 but when people get behind the curtain and get a chance to vote it comes out 69% against and 31% for...we are being lied to...duh!
