Will Katy Perry's Very Own Record Label Be a Success?

Justin Bieber showed off his promotional chops this year by tweeting about Carly Rae Jepsen, who is now sitting comfortably at the top of the charts. But Katy Perry fancies herself a star-maker, too. The 27-year-old pop star is launching her own record label soon, and plans to treat her artists better than most. She's all too aware of the financial pitfalls major labels present for budding artists.

Perry told The Hollywood Reporter, "I'm preparing for it now. And when this record label does come to fruition, I'm going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success. As people are coming to me with opportunities, I'm thinking, 'How would I want to be treated?'" Sounds like a pretty sweet business model -- if it works. Do you think Katy Perry's record label will be a success?

Even if you hate her she will still be successful for awhile most likely. I dislike her music but she has a huge fan base and she hasn't done anything wacky unlike Nicki Minaj who killed her career the moment she released stupid hoe. She will probably be forgotten one day but not now.

I'm sure she knows enough people in the business to hire a couple of good producers and promoters. It's a good idea that she has a plan b, not every musician gets to be popular for the rest of their lives.

People seem to forget that, underneath the wig, makeup, and cupcake bras that there is a serious songstress there; and she's not brain dead or lazy. She tried the less whipped-cream filled route and it simply didn't work out for her. Now that she has the money and opportunity, I'm glad she's going to try to give others the chances she didn't get initially.

(hopefully yes) Because only 10% of new artists actually make money for record labels, they must subsidize the 90% that are financial failures. As long as artists receive royalty advances from record labels, this toxic relationship will exist.

Only when artists are willing and able to pay their own production and promotional costs will record labels be able to give them much better deals.

  • cddjmikey 2012/06/22 22:27:08
Hopefully she will. It all depends on a couple of things. First the talent she signs to the label. If she is the only one that likes them then they won't sell. Second, who she gets to run the day to day operations. She is mainly a financial backer. It depends who is running the studio and the offices and the financial book keeping. Good people and she could go far because her name should draw some pretty good talent. Bad people and her business manager will be in Brazil with her life savings. I'm hoping for the good !

A lot of artists these days are successful with their record label. They just need enough fans and money to make it happen and she has both.

Are you sure? This is the woman who sold out from making Christian rock to shooting whipped cream out of her boobs and faking bisexuality.
  • Ivan Aly Hart 2012/06/22 21:49:09
Maybe she was faking Christianity, ever see it that way? lol

But she's not faking. She pretty much incurred the wrath of all the Gaga stans when she made this tweet-

I don't care about her beliefs, I care about her being contrived and a phony.

Since when is it a sin to wear a cupcake bra? And she made Christian music as a teen, what parent would let their teenage daughter wear that or sing about that stuff? She had no choice then. As an adult, she had the choice. That's not selling out.

I never said it was, I'm atheist anyway so I don't care. Growing up and changing is one thing, being contrived and a label tool is another.

Mostly because young people are convinced that pop music is the only music because they want to dirty dance themselves into low income housing and welfare to support their poor decisions made in a pop music "clubbin'" brain. Me, she won't see a dollar.
