On Wednesday, the sports world received some shocking news. One of NFL's greatest players, former linebacker Junior Seau, was found dead in his home -- with gunshot wounds on his chest. TMZ first reported the story and simulcasted the emotional press conference immediately following his death, which captured his mother break down in a moment viewers won't forget anytime soon.

As of right now, the death is being investigated as a suicide. Seau was a 10-time All-Pro, 12-time Pro Bowler, and is most famous for playing for the San Diego Chargers. He also played for the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. He is expected to be a first ball Pro Football Hall of Famer when he is eligible in a few years. While some may say there were warning signs of Seau's self-destruction, he claimed he fell asleep at the wheel when his car was driven off a cliff back in 2010 and that he was not attempting suicide.

His family has come out and said that they don't blame the NFL for his death and that he showed no signs of depression. ESPN's Adam Schefter also tweeted that Seau never was listed on NFL injury reports for having concussions. That's not to say brain damage shouldn't be ruled out, but until more details come out, Junior Seau's family and friends will continue to mourn the fallen legend and pray for closure.

I definitely think he is a first ballot. I don't know how you could say he isn't. There are others who played LB in there already who aren't as good.

For whatever reason he took his life, it should not affect whether he goes into the Hall of Fame!

No question! A tremendous career deserves the recognition. Always bugs me when a player (in any sport!) is judged not by his on-field career but by what he does off the field. Sorry... I am certain that there's quite a few Hall of Famers that might have a tough go of it if they played in today's demanding atmosphere; including greats like Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle. I don't give a damn what someone did in their off time. Drink, drugs, sex, gamble.. so long as they didn't hurt someone else, it's their life to live. RIP Junior.. NFL Hall of Famer

Without a doubt, first round pick. So sad he found life so unbareable. Sports is a hard but rewarding life, if you are one of the best. Retirement is boring and not very exciting. I don't know what his troubles were but the loss is sad. he could have been an inpriring coach or tutor.

Junior Seau was One of NFL's greatest players and should be in the Football Hall of Fame.

Everything now is in shock and awe over his death and that his brain contributed to his suicide. " family has decided to allow researchers to study his brain, "

Toxicology results and the narrative that could reveal contributing factors in the death could take weeks or longer to complete, said Sarah Gordon of the medical examiner's office.
Since news broke that Seau was found Wednesday in his Oceanside, California, home with a gunshot wound to the chest, there has been speculation about whether repeated hits to his head over his 20-year pro career could be a contributing factor.

It sure is, so when are they going to increase head protection gear?
  • Maurice... BIG BAD... 2012/05/05 07:13:53
    Maurice Tillman
There's no way to increase it, truthfully. They continue to redesign the helmets and add better shock absobers. However, players are bigger, faster, and stronger than they were in the 80's and 90's; when I was little boy. There's no way to minimize the impact of trying to stop a 200+ pound man (running about 20 mph) from scoring a touchdown, unfortunately.

The powers that be have been making a lot of rules to promote player safety. They've been issuing stiff penalties to dirty player. But that's all they can do. There's no way to make football safe. At least the new rules discourage children from playing dirty dirty football, which cause some of these injuries.

He was a giving person who exuded character, a great work effort, and he inspired others to do better; which leads me to believe he had a brain injury. Everyone that actually knew him said that suicide made absolutely no sense. They have already proven that brain damage can occur without having concussions. Some players have quietly suffered concussions because they didn't want to endanger their career.

I'm not a huge football fan although I follow it a little and usually am aware of great players. I have never heard of this guy. So my question is this. If he were still alive would he have ended up in HOF?
