Will Grimlins get a new Batch?
Those of you of a certain age will remember how anarchic, off-beat and downright silly Gremlins 2: The New Bach
was. Moving away from the darker tone of the first movie, Gizmo
returned for a second installment of the horror comedy that saw an army
of Gremlins take over a New York skyscraper. Although it’s been over 20
years since it came to our screens, director Joe Dante still has a
special attachment to the little creatures and wouldn’t rule out
returning for a third installment. Interviewed by Bloody Disgusting about whether he had spoken to Warner Bros about making Gremlins 3, Dante said:
I haven’t had any formal talks, or even informal talks, with them
about it. It’s a title in their library that sooner or later will be
re-exploited…I think they’d probably reboot the whole thing and start
all over or go in a different direction — take the Gremlins someplace else.
Now, it seems that a day doesn’t go by without some new announcement
of Hollywood wanting to remake or reboot long-loved movies, but would a
new Gremlins flick be a terrible idea? Although Dante hasn’t done much of note recently, he was brave enough to take Gremlins 2: The New Batch in a very different direction from the first movie, parodying classic movies such as Rambo and The Wizard of Oz,
and exposing the blatant product placement that was so prevalent at the
time. It may have been silly, but it definitely wasn’t stupid. Could it
be relevant again today? A lot of time might have passed, but maybe we
are ready for more Gremlins.
