Will 'Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs' Be the Scariest Game Ever?

"Amnesia: The Dark Descent" is largely regarded as the scariest video game ever made. Even fans of the "Silent Hill" series were stunned when the experimental horror game was released in 2010. Compilation videos of people reacting to the game went viral. Now Frictional Games, the original developers, are turning the project over to a studio called thechineseroom, creators of ghost adventure game "Dear Esther," to create "Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs."

Dan Pinchbeck, creative director at thechineseroom, told Gamasutra, "We want this game to be absolutely skin-crawlingly, heart-shatteringly, and nerve-jarringly terrifying -- that's the target. Everything is geared around that. Just turning people to complete ice and making them have complete meltdowns ... If we don't frighten people as much as the original, then we've failed. But now we have to frighten people that know what to expect." It's slated for Fall 2012.

I nearly peed myself on multiple occasions, and that was just from watching a Let's Play. I tried to play it once, and after ten minutes I'd already ragequit and decided to play Animal Crossing. If this is supposedly worse? I guess I should kiss my panties goodbye...
All silliness aside, I hope this one retains the same kind of story as DD and Justine - I want there to be confusion as to the characters origins, and a rich and genuinely frightening backstory which will make me spend hours reading TVTropes in search of meaning. That's my favorite kind of game, or TV show, or movie, or book, or whatever. I am genuinely looking forward to this game.

RE isn't really supposed to be scary in the first place. Maybe a few jump scares and atmosphere, but mainly a fun shoot-em-up game.

So its not the scariest game ever...which is the question.

Amnesia is a horror/psychological game, never played the game but have seen gameplay to know that it likes to pick on your brain -- and sanity like the main character.

Resident Evil is considered to be under the horror-survival game just because it's got zombies, monsters etc., but I've never found it scary until my brother started playing RE4. RE5 wasn't scary, but more adrenaline-pumping and, at some times, fustrating.

Sure, Resident Evil 6 isn't going to be the SCARIEST horror-genre game, but I'm sure it'll be one of the most ENTERTAINING ("fun as hell guarantee") of this year.

Sorry if I confused you! \X)

Resident Evil was never a shoot-em-up until the 4th game. It was about survival and panic, which lead to being scary. As much as i feel Resident Evil 4 was great, it did lead to the pile of rubbish that was 5. 6 does look good. I'm hoping Leon's story will go back to Survival Horror

The Amnesia games are scary, but Silent Hill 2 is what really got me, because it made me thing what would my personal hell, my own Silent Hill would be like, and that's scarier than anything.

OH! The Fatal Frame games are the scariest games ever, by far.

I get to into a game, that it just spooks me. I really shut everything else out. That's what really get's a person scared about anything, be it movies or even books.

It's supposed to be scarier than the original... and OH MY GOD the original is scary. Not even walkthroughs and playthrough videos help at all since you never quite know what's coming.

I say 'No' because I didn't really wanna say 'Yes.' lol Honestly, Amnesia DD was good for what it was. I really liked it. Scariest game ever? Mmmmnah. Pretty friggin' scary? Oh yeah, of course. But I can't say if this next one will be the scariest ever either. We'll see. I'm excited either way. :)

If they can still hold onto the psychological torment the first game brought on, than you bet your mother friggin' ass it's gonna be pretty damn scary.

It could be, but they have to understand what made amnesia scary. Amnesia was scary because you couldn't just blast all your enemies to pieces. There was subtle horror in it, the sounds and environment all worked together with monsters who jumped out at the right moments. If they can recapture that it can be scary. Hopefully they don't just turn it into another lame shooter though. My question is, why the hell don't we have more adventure games? It will always be the best genre.

Yep! I'm tempted to get into game design just to bring back the genre... Amnesia showed that you can still do it, easily, but a new Amnesia could do it much better. (just think what could happen now days, you could have multiple solutions to any given "puzzle," really interactive and intuitive inventories... the options are limitless) Adventure is the perfect genre for horror, but then again, it's the perfect genre for everything. Shooters are fun in moderation, but how many people really want to just blast things away all the time?
