I always appreciate ignorant frustrated losers who jump on this antiFrench total crap wagon. French military history is one of the most glorious of the world, if not the most. Through 1500 years, French history is certainly more filled with victories than defeats. France was the dominant power in Europe when USA were still a desert populated by Indian naions. More recently, main WW1 battles were won by the French like Verdun or Marne battles. WW2 1940 defeat was an accident due to bad tactics. A new French rebuilt army fought on most of this war theaters after 1942. French total WW2 casualties,600000, were higher than all US losses on all fronts, 416800. The French won their main battles in Vietnam from 1945 to 1954, except the last one Dien Bien Phu,in 1854, because everything was already politically fixed. Algerian guerilla was overcrushed on the ground. They lost 1,3 million casualties, from 1954 to 1962, while the French lost only 32000 troops. This withdrawal was only a political agreement. And i remind to all of you, bunch of losers, that Germany population in 1914 and 1918, 70 million, was almost twice the size of French population, 40 million. The French are cowards due to there actions of war.

1876, a massive surrender to the Germans at the first sign of trouble.

World War 1. 300,000 French soldiers deserted the front and left British and Canadian troops to cover for them causing the death of 85,000 allies at the start of the Somme offensive.

World War 2. Instant surrender at the prospect of having their buildings bombed.
At the liberation of France in Paris, 873 English soldiers were arrested for having fights and arguments with French Parisians that refused to rebuild their owns.

The French consensus was "We didn't do it, someone else should repair them.
British shells caused this, they should rebuild our houses for us".

The French gave the Nazi Gestapo the lists of names of Polish people, Gypsies, Homosexuals, People with learning disabilities and Jews. Worried that the Gestapo might not think they were doing enough they even went out and rounded up all of their own civilians for them.

Cowardice and arrogance is still prevalent in their society.

Ask a Parisian his opinion of an Englishman.

For a second time, the English came, liberated and left at a cost of 2.5 million British lives.

They should have stayed and taught them manners.

Fact: The French have lost EVERY major battle (except one) that they have ever fought against the British. The French have a terrible reputation, as it has been proved time and time again that the French either surrender immediately, or simply run away. American General George S Patton famously said "I'd rather have a German division in front of me, than a French one behind". Do some research - you cannot re-write history!!

Well If your family was in Itally at the time, they should know that they were working hand in hand with the Nazi government right from 1936. Google "Rome-Berlin agreement" and you'll see. Italy was one of the first country to open their arms to the Nazi regime because they helped Mussolini invade part of eastern Africa in his expansionnist vision.(France and GB have more colonies than me, it's not fair kind of attitude) In addition to this, the italians helped the german army in 1940 by attacking southern France where the italians were massively beaten and sent back home. So before criticising others, please look at the state of Europe when WW2 happened and who helped who and then lets see who we cal pathetic. One more thing, there was something called the French Resistance, but then again, it does involve a lot of reading if you really want to know how it worked.

Are you insane ? Do you only know how many US & British soldiers lost their lives in France in ww2 to save your coward asses ? You guys failed everybody because your army was nothing but an arrogant joke... All in the mouth and nothing in the pants, so typically french since ww1. And before you open your arrogant french mouth : I'm Italian, many in my family fought germans as partisans (real partisans not like last minute partisans in france that showed their "manly courage" by shaving women head.. yeah very courageous...) and my great uncle joined French Legion in Corisca, from Tuscany, to fight Germans. What did your family do man ? I guess a grand nothing at best.

There have been millions of brave Frenchmen who have died over the centuries in so many wars. Furthermore, from 1659 until 1871 France was the undisputed master of Europe, the richest and most populous European nation and had carved out a great overseas Empire and subjugated many European nations.

At the turn of the century in 1800, France dominated Europe. It would take another 15 years of war, which saw the destruction of the Kingdom Prussia by France, the defeat of Austria in 1805 and again in 1809 by France, the defeat of the Russians in 1805, and in 1806-1807. It would also see the conquest of Spain by France in 1808, though a guerrilla was conducted against them. After the Congress of Vienna there were more war involving the French. They conquered the second largest colonial empire. They carried the coalition in the Crimea where the French were victorious by successfully storming the Malakov redoubt (while the British were at the same time repulsed from the Redan redoubt). In 1859 the French shattered the Austrians at Solferino and Magenta. In 1861 the French all but conquered Mexico, but Austria's incredible defeat in 1866 called them home. The French lost to Prussia in 1870, it's true, but rallied. They recovered far faster than Bismarck expected them too, and it was largely France that defeated Germany in WWI. But the French Army in 1940 was 117 divisions, which was larger than the American Army in 1945, standing at 90 divisions. But WWII in Europe was won by the Russians and not by the Americans. I'd also say that France lost in 1940 because the British failed them. Churchill himself admits this when he criticised the British government for only putting 10 divisions ashore in France, he said "It is by no means acceptable that one ally should do the paying and the other ally do the dying." France sacrificed itself for your freedom and mine in 1940 and this is the thanks she gets? She fought Germany without anything but token help from Britain, so virtually by herself, knowing full well that France could never beat Germany alone. But it stood up anyway, and hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen gave their lives in an attempt to win a battle they knew they couldn't, and you have the nerve to say over the internet that they just sit around and bitch? You should pay a visit to the library once in a while.

Absolutely not, and the people making these allegations know nothing about the subject. The French have a very, very rich military history.

After France fell back in WWII, that's when they were depicted as cowards, which is absurd to say the least, what about all the French liberation armies? Are you truly going to sit there and say men going up against Hitler at his empire's prime with no proper support "cowards"?

I'll tell you who are/were cowards, the nation responsible for these accusations, USA. They happily sat there while Hitler ran rampant until he declared war on them. Then have the nerve to deem themselves responsible for winning World War II, when in fact the real heroes of WWII were the British, the French, the Russians, and all other nations involved for the greater good, and not because the finger was suddenly pointed at them. And the Americans should be grateful for this great country, because if it wasn't for France and Spain, they wouldn't have won their revolution, and the Brits would have wiped the floor with them.

As soon as the armistice was signed he was thinking of revenge. Jean de Lattre is the only one to resist the Germans when they invaded the Southern Zone. He was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He escaped in September, 1943 and on October 17 flew to Algeria
where he took command of what was to become the First Army. A brilliant military leader, de Lattre won a number of battles against the German forces in WW2, even defeating Rommel's forces in one battle. He captured the island of Elba and landed in Provence on August 15, 1944. What followed was a legendary epic: the liberation of 25 departments, victory at Colmar, crossing of the Rhine and victory as far as the Danube. On the 8th of May, 1945, Jean de Lattre signed at Berlin, in the name of France, the surrender of Germany. In 1949 he was the first commander in chief of the Armies in Western Europe.
In fact General de Lattre became became chief of staff of the NATO infantry in Europe.

In 1950, he was named France’s High Commissioner in Indo-china and Commander-in -chief in the Far East. When he was assigned to Indochina, the French forces were pessimistic and felt the war was hopeless. With his charisma and audacious personality, he literally raised French morale and stopped a VietMinh offensive from taking Hanoi that would have succeeded if someone as capable as de Lattre wasn't in command at the time. He won 3 major victories with so little casualties while killing thousands of VietMinh and in fact his victories were so damaging that many within the Vietminh were doubting the communist cause and considering deserting.
His presence alone made the the French feel that victory is attainable and that France was going to win the Indochina War but his only son, Bernard, was killed on May 30, 1951, at the head of his Vietnamese troops. Jean de
Lattre died of cancer on January 11, 1952. The President of the Republic placed the Marshal’s baton on his casket at the Arc de Triomphe. Having "earned his country’s gratitude" Jean de Lattre is buried in Vendée next to his son, Bernard. Their epitaph reads simply "Died for France"

It is unfortunate he died during the war. The Indochina War would surely have turned out differently had he lived.

Here is a link of an old Times magazine to learn more about General de Lattre:

Comparing de Lattre de Tassigny to Napoleon is like comparing George Washington to General Thomas Jonathan Jackson. Neither Jackson nor de Lattre de Tassigny lived to see the end of their respected wars, both no doubt would have made a difference in their respected wars. How much difference? It's sad, but no one will ever know. But I made one statement and you blew it totally out of proportion...... France hasn't had a man like Napoloeon since he died, now have they?
