I watched every one of the Boston Blackie movies on the Late Show when I was a kid. I'd pretend I was asleep, wait till Mom and Dad were asleep, sneak back out to the living room, turn on the TV and sit real close with the volume barely up. I *loved* the old movies. Chester Morris was seriously sexy.

You can see his rugged, mashed-nose good looks in someone today like Jason Statham, can't you?

As for me, I always associate Chester Morris with his days as a leading man at MGM, in such classics as The Big House, The Divorcee, Red-Headed Woman and Three Godfathers.

Among others; Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, I could go on. There were so many classy, talented, and high quality actors in those days. It makes a lot of what is passing for actors/actresses these days look like cheap, plastic farces.

lol yeah I know, after I posted that, and read the title and laughed. I should have put Clint Eastwood.

I would argue that Clint himself isn't Old Hollywood. True, his career dates back to 1955 or so, but I don't believe that he was ever under contract to a studio the way they were in the era of the Studio System. What's more, he initially rose to stardom through the new medium of television, not the big screen. AND he made a very successful transition from film acting to directing. All of those were largely unheard of in Old Hollywood. In many ways, he's one of the first examples of the New Hollywood.

They had dialogue coaches then, but her voice never really took to film, and she had started to drink heavily by 1931/32. BTW, unless I'm sorely mistaken, Gary Cooper was NOT in the movie It (1927).

I figured he would be unbilled, since it was so early in his career. He didn't get his big break until 1928 or 1929.

BTW, how can you discuss Louise Brooks without mentioning her genuine screen triumphs, Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl? Those are the films for which she will always be remembered! Sadly, they were also the films that inspired her American studio boss to sabotage her career.
