Once upon a time, it was a cool channel.
Now it just personifies everything that is horrible about music today.

everyone is ... radios only play whats most popular instead of what is actually good... but if they played songs solely for being good music mass population may not like it then rating would go down and everything would crash.. same for mtv and awards... most awards are popularity contests not awards for good music... but thats what cds are for lol and why everyone should call in and request what they like( that is actually good) instead of sticking with the same stupid 50 songs over an over and over

spin rolling stone mainstream press What, are you KIDDING me? It's not anybody's fault but the people who would LISTEN to it... I mean, if people didn't just buy whatever crap they shoved on the shelf, or turned the darn radio off when nothing good was playing, well heck, these characters at the record companies would be forced to get a tad more sensitive to people's tastes...

    eh-du-nah... do what ya' want...

who shoves that crap on the shelves and tells the people who listen to it its the "latest hit" or the "hottest summer single". mass appeal, people like what people like. even if the lyrics happen to be "i get 1000 hugs from 10000 lightning bugs"

Payola, and the cozy relationship between record companies, radio conglomerates, and the FCC.

I live to see the day when the FCC is abolished, along with the RIAA, so that the spectrum is opened wide to a brand-new world of potential talent and artists of integrity!

I'm gonna Say Supermarkets they Killed Off Independent Record Shops by only selling Top 40 Chart Sludge which unfortunately appeals to the majority of morons who can't be bothered to look further for music and will only listen to what is currently being peddled their way , they didn't change they've always been appathic when it comes to music but they did purchase it from a small independent store and because the supermarkets sell them at £ 7.99 each as opposed to £ 10.99 they're gonna buy them where they can get them cheaper but who can blame them really ? It has just pushed the small buisnesses under so anything and they used to stock alot of non mainstream alternative and Rock albums and collectors items and if they didn't stock them then they would always try and order the item for you but the supermarkets just stock commercial Top 40 gunk and nothing else and won't order it cos they haven't heard of it and thats's why everywhere you go you only hear the same annoying simple songs played over , there's no variety anymore especially here in the UK .

Actually all of the above have conspired to foist mediocrity upon music. A lot of us would support more independent music, if only we had access to it, but the mainstream likes cookie-cutter formula bands and singers.

Easy answer. Radio. Most stations cut deals with the major record labels and its damn near impossible for someone else to get their song played if they aren't paying for it somehow. Independent artists just can't compete with that. Sure there are college radio stations that will play whatever, but those have very limited audiences.

And MTV. Which doesn't even play music anymore. Oh, wait, except for at 4am. XD

I think that there are a lot of bands that do deserve the attention they get, though. There are just so many more that are unknown.

The reason I didn't go with MTV is that they have a zillion offshoot stations at this point. And a lot of the branch type ones like MTV2 and MTVU pick up the slack on independents that the main MTV station (which barely plays music anyway) ignores.
    Radio is definitely guilty though.

Yeah exactly. You're never going to receive radio-play unless you're signed onto a major label, which takes a lot to get.

Yep. And am I the only one who thought ti was funny that music magazines were listed on here? I mean seriously, I'm subscribed to Rolling Stone and Spin and I don't see how anyone who's actually read either magazine could think that they ignore independent music...

Exactly. I read Rolling Stone, and while they do feature the more popular artists, they have stuff about more independent music too..

Exactly...I mean, sure, an independent artist is gonna have a hard time getting on the cover of Rolling Stone, but that's cause you have to be like a major pop culture icon to be given that. On the inside though, they get their share of coverage.
Spin, on the other hand, features independant artists on the cover ALL THE TIME! And does entire lengthy feature articles on them....as well as having regular sections in which they promote unknown artists/songs. So that one REALLY baffles me =/
  • ☆Varsha★ Ashley~... December 01, 2009 00:23:23
    ☆Varsha★
They do? That's cool. Maybe I should start reading Spin then..

Yep, I think Rolling Stone is a bigger mag, so they probably only post the biggest people at the time on the cover. But that's just the way it is, and independent label artists still get to be seen.

    all of the above.
    mostly radio and mtv
alotta bands i listen too dont do well with radio so there kinda in the dark but have a lot of fans at the same time. in my opinion the bands i listen to are far more better(not musically but just at surviving and maintaing a fan base and being out there) then Lady Gaga or Britney Spears. if lady gaga didnt get no push she'd be nowhere. the bands i listen to arent 'nowhere' they have a fairly good fanbase but no where near the artists you here on radio. and radio plays the same shit from the same artists 50 million times an hour. nothing new. and theres PLENTY of artists that are good and diserves to be in the spotlight.
mtv tries to put bands on but they arent doin a good job.

what you SHOULD watch is Fuse.
    Fuse beats MTV anyday

i wish progressive music was still out there, i can't find any. music like Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin will be respected and well recepted for year to come they will be remembered. the jonas brothers, or britney spears or whoever else will be forgotten, people will listen to it and 20 years and hopefully say "ew"

britney spears wont be forgotten. just because its not last generations music means it wont be remembered/ britney brought out some great hits early in her career but her decisions out of music made some people turn on her. she has out out great music though. the jb i cant say the same, cuz their music sucks
