I still go with the strike that cancelled the freakin world series. My full interest has STILL never returned to baseball as a result. And I know a lot of people who still feel the same way. It took baseball years to recover, and in some ways it still hasn't fully done so. Although I agree with Hank on the Designated Hitter rule - I'm a baseball purist I suppose - and I've always thought the Designated Hitter was just plain stupid.

Baseball has been damaged by the use of steroids as it has been in other games as well.

Because in spite of the investigation into the steroid use, it's evident that his physique hasn't gotten any smaller. I think the way he feels is if Mcguire and others can get away with it why shouldn't he. I think he is still taking them, and he is daring anyone to test him. The commisioner is helpless and he has to let him break the record or the cat will be out of the bag big time.

there should have been a none of the above selection, because I feel that the price of tickets and the players salaries are to blame for the damage to baseball as we had known it. Gone are the days when a family can go watch the major league baseball teams, a family of 4 costs 60 dollars and that is with seats up in the nose bleed section, who in the hell can see the game from way up there? In my own personal opinion, give each player 250,000 dollars, let them learn to live on that--hell there are people out here in the real world that work harder than some ball players and they do not make even 40,000 dollars a year.

I agree with every word that you say, but what you cite are all symptoms of the effects of free agency.

Attendance is up every where, don't think salaries are an issue.

The players strike did the most damage. It took me 7 years to come back and start watching again.

VERY DECIDEDLY THE OUTRAGEOUS TICKET AND CONCESSION PRICES! That (unfortunately) just wasn’t one of the options.
I used to be able to take my family without having to take out a second mortgage! You would think that the games would be more interesting in order to justify these ridiculous prices…but they aren’t!

I'm a small ball (no dirty jokes) NL guy and I think that DH's just make fans focus too much on big hits and forget about the all-important defense aspect of baseball.

Barry, tied with Pete, they both were "fooling" us baseball fans while taking our hard earned money, then "free agency", (which is NOT free) and last but not least the Designated hitter (if the pitcher plays in the game he needs to step up to the plateand take his swings ! ). Not a fan of the "new" baseball.
