If you don't have a GameCube or Wii, and have a DS then you can play Animal Crossing: Wild World.
An alternative to the DS one is City Folk on the Wii. If you have a 3DS, there's an upcoming sequel for it but it looks different from the others. I also took the liberty of showin' a good video and some box arts so you can keep your eye out for'em!
Also from my first town on the GameCube version, I like Tangy the best.
As for close seconds and thirds:
K.K Slider and Blathers for non-villagers.
Tom and Peanut for the villagers :)
