Just like sports teams identify their most valuable players, New York magazine’s Vulture blog has ranked the 100 most valuable movie stars. At the top of their list is Robert Downey Jr. The other 9 stars in the top ten include Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Clint Eastwood, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, and George Clooney.
So, you may be wondering: How did Vulture come up with this list? And what exactly does it mean to be a “valuable” movie star? Writers Kyle Buchanan and Josh Wolk were attempting to identify which movie stars bring the most value to projects they’re involved in. Essentially, how much talent do they provide and how much money do they draw in.
To do so, they examined eight data points: 1) Domestic box office numbers (only movies where he/she starred or had a strong supporting role, no animated films); 2) Overseas box office numbers; 3) Studio value; 4) Likability; 5) Oscars (nominations and/or wins); 6) Critics’ scores; 7) Non-tabloid magazine covers; 8) Tabloid value.
Each of these categories (with the exception of Oscars) was evaluated over the last five years; anything earlier was considered out of date. For the Oscar score, the writers used a career-long tally because an actor will forever be advertised as “Academy Award winning/nominated.”
So, SodaHeads: Do you agree with Vulture’s ranking? Who do you think is the most valuable movie star?

Firedye 2012/08/06 04:08:41Other (please leave a comment)+6Where are Liam Neeson, Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, Alec Guinness? It sounds like, based on the fact that they only take in 5 years worth of data, it's who is the most valuable movie star right now. It should be on more of a career basis.

And where are the younger actors on this list? Where is Kirsten Stewart(as much I can't stand her), Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutchinson etc?
both great actors. Career wise Robert Downey Jr. has been around longer than Depp but, Johnny is a hot commodity these days so it's difficult to judge who's more valuable
king,believe it or not.
But i love RDJ too (:
Personally I admire Robert Downey Jr for his ability to conquer the drug
habit, which was no doubt started in his childhood by hippie parents who though
it was cute to give him some, or maybe it was just used as a babysitter, but
there is no doubt he was started on drugs very early by the parents who were
supposed to love, protect and nurture him. I am so happy he seems to be able
to resist them now. Besides, he is a tremendous actor.
