SLIDESHOW: Which Action Star Is Over the Hill?

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone

Sly returns to the big screen next Friday with "The Expendables" -- but is he expendable himself at age 64? Case in point: The 2008 version of "Rambo" came in second behind "Meet the Spartans" on opening weekend.

  2. Bruce Willis

    Bruce Willis

At 55, Bruce Willis hasn't had a hit in a while -- but in 2007, "Live Free or Die Hard" was an international sensation, making it the most successful film in the franchise. Guess people want more Bruce.

  3. Harrison Ford

    Harrison Ford

At 68, the force is still with Harrison Ford. He's currently set to appear in next year's blockbuster "Cowboys & Aliens," and yet ANOTHER "Indiana Jones" is in the works. He does the AARP proud!

  4. Nicolas Cage

    Nicolas Cage

Cage, 46, is one of the younger guys on our list. He too has a hit with his "National Treasure" franchise, but his overspending (he recently bought a pyramid to be buried in) makes him comic fodder for "SNL."

  5. Steven Seagal

    Steven Seagal

Something about 59-year-old Steven Seagal just says '80s (perhaps it's the gold chain in this picture). Sure, he has a "hit" with "Steven Seagal: Lawman" -- but it's a reality show on A&E.

  6. Jackie Chan

    Jackie Chan

56-year-old Jackie Chan's remake of "The Karate Kid" topped the box office and a sequel is in the works. But was that more to do with Chan or Will Smith's 12-year-old son Jaden?

At age 64, Sylvester Stallone returns to the big screen next Friday with "The Expendables," a (surprise!) testosterone-infused action flick meant to appeal to popcorn-munching August crowds looking for a couple of hours of free air conditioning.

According to Cinemablend.com, "The Expendables ... is a bloated mess, a bunch of guys past their prime punching and kicking each other and pretending it's for our benefit, when its really just one last self-congratulatory hurrah."

Stallone is joined by Bruce Willis, 55, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, 63, making these guys the oldest group of action stars this side of Harrison Ford (who is currently preparing to helm next year's Steven Spielberg-produced "Cowboys & Aliens" at age 68).

But do these guys still have what it takes to sell tickets? Cinemablend.com isn't convinced.

"You've got no reason beyond nostalgia to care about this group of self-satisfied roughnecks and their desire to track down a criminal," reads the site's review.

It might be time for Stallone to hang it up ... but we wouldn't mind seeing Bruce Willis in a few more shoot-'em-ups before he checks into the nursing home.

Really this question doesn't deserve a response but you can't leave a comment without answering the question. It's a pittiful time in life when all some people have to do is sit around and pick apart men such as those in this group. I guess it's true, those who can do, those who can't teach. In you wildiest dreams you could'nt aspire to be half a man as any one of these guys.

When I see old actors like Sly doing "another one", I just think it's pathetic that he can't accept his age and let it go that he is not Rambo anymore. There are a lot of make-up, stand-ins and all tricks from the special effects box involved to make him look good. Clint is the smart one - he knows he is old and chooses to either direct or have the "old guys" role without pretending that he still got it. He is brilliant. Just think about it: Sly is beyond andropause - imagine a women beyond menopause would try to be something they are not... Just move over and give the young, really hot actors a chance!

Sorry Mr Stallone but it did not have a none of the above answer ... All these guys are laughing at this poll all the way to the bank ... I saw only clips of their movies because I don't watch fiction, but I have seen pictures of them and they are still ok for their age ... I had a couple of yard-sales this summer because my husband has diabetes and had a stroke ... He just lost his big toe last week because of diabetes ... I have to come up with lots of money to pay for his medical bills ... When I had the yard-sales all the guys in their 60's that came looked so old ... So I guess if you are a high paid actor, you don't have to worry about money to look good or money for the doctor, etc. ... I think they have special lens on the cameras too that will make them look a little younger ... Being an actor forces one to work at keeping the weight down more, so that will help their health some too ... They are not as over the hill as the rest of us because of the nature of their job ... Anyone who calls them over the hill is just pea green jealous because they lucked into a high paying field while the rest of us have to work very hard for nothing ...

See the problem with this story is it isn't entirely accurate. This question should have had a 3rd option and that option should be Are the critics over the hill? I personally am my own critic. I can look at a movie and decide for myself if I find the movie interesting, moving ,filled with action, and appealing to me. Movie critics should be condemned for life by watching reruns of Archie Bunker episodes as they do not know what I enjoy seeing or don't like. I never take the advice of movie critics as they are in most cases wrong about the movies I would enjoy seeing.

When Rambo came out I thought that it would be horrible, but rented it anyway. I think that it was better than First Blood. Anything with Stalone or Willis is still great. Like Clint Eastwood, they've just become harder in their old age. Also, Travolta has really hit his prime - just as good in comedy (e.g. Wild Hogs, Old Dogs) as he is in action (e.g. Pelham123, From Paris With Love). That old sweathog ROCKS!

I hate the options on this poll. I think Bruce is showing his age more, but they are BOTH awesome!!! I'll see anything that Stallone is in as long as he keeps making movies. I think we're just a bunch of snobs that worship the "young, thin and beautiful" people of Hollywood. Stallone AND Willis are REAL men and should be lauded as such.

There are only 2 options? This vote isn't to make Stallone and WIlis look bad is it? No, of course not. I would pay to see both of these guys if they were 100. They can still bring it and at 100 could still bring it better than the cheap shot artist writing this story.

If we actually looked at how many movies made money we would look at movies a lot differently. Guys like Clooney and DiCaprio would be looked at a lot differently. Huge hype. Money losing movies. Lots of undeserved awards. Only in Hollywood.

I wish to say that we are truly becoming a socioty that despite trying to eliminate racism seems to love ageism. In the golden age of hollywood we loved our stars and realized they were stars and the new guys on the block had a long way to go before they were thought of as something other than a matinee idol. Here are some examples...Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen...action adventure...academy award. John Wayne True Grit...action adventure...academy award.... Gary Cooper High Noon...acton adventure....academy award.Gregory Peck and Kirk Douglass did several aclaimed action adventure films over 50. Charlton Heston stared in many of his big action adventure blockbusters in his late 40's and early 50's. He was a fighter pilot in Midway in 1976. He was 53. It comes down to this....is the scrip good? Does the story warrent an older experienced star. I thought the lateest Rambo was good. It actually made sense and there was a group of guys Rambo was with...not just himself. The story even has the other mercs making fun of his age. What they fail to consider is his experience. On the other hand the last Indy Jones film was stupid and not worthy of the three prior outtings. It had little to do with Ford being old and more about Aliens in the world of Indy Jones did ...

Sean Conery was never put down for doing good flicks into his 70's!!!!!! I would be very interested in hearing responses to what I have written. I taught film history for several years and think this youth movement in film is just stupid. Also, just as an add on, James Bond is always a more mature over 40 hero but we do not get after him. I plan to judge The Expendables based on story...not age!

Well they only gave us two to chooses out of the six. What kind of s--t is that ? But I would have chose Stallone anyway. Bruce is still kicking and Cage is still the wild man and in no way washed up. Ford has still got it when he plays some older ex agent or the like that's got pulled in to some s--t. Chan is still fun to watch, as for Seagal once you've seen the 1st two or three movies he came out with you've seen them all. But I still like to watch his fight scenes since it's the same style of martial arts I study and I think one of the most deadly forms.

Dumb!! Hay if these men can still function in life then I see nothing wrong with them making movies!! That's what they chose to do in life, that's what they love doing, and that's what they're good at. Age should have no factor for movies. If they're good there should be no problem. That's kinda stupid that their age even came across your thoughts. Besides that they look good for their age so they must be pretty healthy & in good enough shape. Stallone doesn't even look like he is in his sixties. If I didn't know his age I would have guessed he was in his forties. STUPID QUESTION!!

Some jealous people will take cheap shots any chance they get. It won't be so much fun when they are in their 60's and still want to do things and unhappy idiots try to beat them down. Notice how there wasn't an option to vote in favor of these guys? Just a cheap shot from someone who has nothing intelligent to say.

Personally I can't wait to see The Expendables. What critics can't seem to understand is that not all movies are supposed to be dramatic masterpeices. For anyone looking for shakespeare-worthy stories then this isn't the movie for you. If you want to see a group of guys destroying everything in their path then this is it. It's an action film people. Quit expecting so much!

This is the most stupid question I've heard all day. What gives? If Sylvester Stallone wants to make another movie, what's wrong with that? Why shoot him down for trying something new? His age doesn't matter. He's still an actor. And, I don't see any reason to give up on these legendary stars. They still have a lot to offer their fans and the public. We're not going to have them forever, you know?

Yeah, I go for Stallone. But really, a movie's success depends on three things: story, story , and story. William Shatner in a wheelchair could be a hit in the right story. Fx don't mean nuttin' if the story sucks.

I didn't want to choose an answer. As for Willis, Stallone, or anyone else getting too old to do the purely physical type action, they should just switch to more dramatic roles, or even comedy. Both Willis and Schwarzenegger have done comedy type capably.

But Hollywood movies as a whole no longer interest me. Especially for action,I've been turning to Korean TV drama series with English subtitles. Like "Emperor of the Sea," "Chuno / Slave Hunters," "Jumong," "Iljimae." and many others.

See the youtube videos like these for an idea of what I mean:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Not to take anything away from the Hollywood action heroes IN THEIR PRIME, but the Korean action stars are far more dynamic and SKILLED, as actors and martial arts, etc. than their Hollywood counterparts.

All of them are too over-the-hill, except for Jackie Chan. He still does his own stunts. Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Seagal are just bloated old men. Harrison Ford needs to hang up his whip. Willis, maybe. I never considered Nicholas Cage an action star. He's better at comedy.
