Nirvana were a punk band... Grunge isn't really a genre. But there were 2 forms of "grunge" really. One side was the zepplin-esque, sabbath-esque phsycodelic metal type stuff with Soundgarden, Alice In Chains etc. Then on the other hand was the punkier ones with Nirvana and Sonic Youth etc.
I would say Bleach is a very punk album. Punk is about attitude not necessarily sound. Look at the differences between Patti Smith and Refused for instance.
Pure Hell was pretty good as well.
Bad Brains are badass.
Bad brains would have to be my favorite, a long with Black Flag as well.
