Who "Hurt" Better?

I heard the Nine Inch Nails version of Hurt earlier and personally I feel Johnny Cash's cover is far better, which do you prefer?

I like them both, but I think Johnny Cash did better. But I do like N.I.N. though.

Truthfully, I heard the Johnny Cash cover first, and loved it from the start. I feel bad that I didn't hear Nine Inch Nails first, because that is a huge influence on my interests. Either way though, I feel like the Nine Inch Nails version is rather whiny compared to Cash's cover. I also think that it's alot more depressing when he sings it, because he's alot more experienced with life.

Hadn't heard from Cash for YEARS. Then I'm watching video game previews and I said hey I know this song... or something like it. I have not heard the NIN original but I will look it up as soon as opportunity comes.

NIN did a really awesome job with writing that song, and a good job preforming it. But, In my opinion, Johnny did a way better version of the song than NIN. Johnny made it sound personall, made it actually mean something. He made it "hurt", so to speak. Awesome song for both guys, but Johnny just has my vote.

Johnny Cash performed it so well that it didn't even sound like a cover. It's amazing that he left us just as strongly as he stepped in the spotlight.
Fun fact: VH1 ranked Johnny's rendition of "Hurt" as the 33rd greatest song from 2000 to 2009.

I think it was ranked pretty fairly. If you compare it to the rest of the songs on the list (and some that weren't), 33's a great place for it.

Johnny's has me in tears by the time the song is over. It only takes about 30 seconds if I'm watching the video. N.I.N.'s original is great, but Johnny took it new places and made it his own. It makes sense to me -- I count myself among those who consider the Man In Black to be the very first punk.
