Who deserved the Oscar: Judy Garland in "A Star is Born" or Grace Kelly in "The Country Girl"?

ClassicBeauty ~ is classy 2009/09/12 16:45:11
Judy, Judy, Judy!
Grace DID win the Oscar and deserved it as well!
Forget them...what about the other Oscar nominees of 1954 such as Dorothy Dandridge in "Carmen Jones", Jane Wyman in "Magnificent Obsession", and Audrey Hepburn in "Sabrina"?

Grace Kelly definitely deserved to win the Oscar as Best ACTRESS. If the award was given for great musical performances, Judy Garland would have won. But the award is given for ACTING and Grace Kelly gave the much better acting performance.

Grace Kelly won largely because it was "her year." She had five movies out in 1954, and two of them were absolute classics "Dial M for Murder" and "Rear Window." No one ever talks about how "Rear Window" wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. Five movies is ridiculous and to have been the lead actress in such classics meant that Grace Kelly had all of the momentum. BTW, if you watch all of "The Country Girl," you will be pleasantly surprised. It's not nearly as clear cut as the voting has suggested so far. Personally, I prefer the more toned down, believable performance of Grace Kelly over Judy's slightly over the top performance (no offense to her- she still did a great job) anyways. Also remember that Oscars don't award bonus points for singing ability.

I hate to sound catty, but I just saw a biography of Grace Kelly on the PBS series "Extraordinary Women", and from the sound of it, Kelly had affairs with just about every one of her male co-stars, beginning with Gary Cooper in "High Noon" back in 1952. Since she starred in 5 movies in 1954, with that track record, she probably slept with half of the Motion Picture Academy, securing all those votes!

Another thing working in Kelly's favor, though, was she played against type in "The Country Girl". (That frumpy cardigan deserved a supporting Oscar). Works for a lot of beautiful women, i.e. Charlize Theron in "Monster". Still I agree with Groucho Marx that Garland was robbed. PIty she never got one of those "career" Oscars.

Denying Ms Garland would have been tantamount to denying Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl, Julie Andrews for Mary Poppins, or Liza Minelli for Cabaret, had they been denied.

There's no need to diss Grace. Afterall, SHE had nothing to do with Judy's loss. Hers was a credible performance, and unlike Judy, she had strong studio support behind her. Judy's performance is so raw, so...stunning, that it's still difficult to believe that she did not win in a cake-walk! That being said, I think it's Dorothy Dandrige's turn in "Carmen Jones" that holds up best today. Audrey Hepburn is simply magical in "Sabrina", though IMO Jane Wyman in "Magnificent Obsession" is strictly filler. But when all is said and done, it is JUDY GARLAND who's talent is unmatched by very few-then or now! That fact that the Academy chose not to celebrate this remarkable talent when given the opportunity when given the chance matters little because both her performance and gifts continues to soar!

Ok....Ok.....I'm gonna do this just because! Lol....I have great respect for Grace & Judy but Sabrina is my choice of my personal fave as an entire work! A very fun romantic comedy with an outstanding cast! Ok.....not the pure hardcore drama but Audrey Hepburn as usual is totally captivating!

Wow? I thought "Country Girl" went a long way to define her as so! I admit "The Bridges over Toko Ri" stinks but It does not disuade me from liking the bulk of the work William Holden did!

There are few great actors like Lemmon or Hepburn that did not have a stinker or two! You have to factor in her entire career was relatively short. I place alot of credence in who Alfred Hitchcock cast in his films!

I think she was always under-rated being under contract got her a lot of "girl" parts and I think she had more talent than they ever utilized.

The Grace Kelly scene is pathetic it's so badly acted. Groucho Marx said it best wen he telegrammed Judy Garland after the awards ceremony: "It (Grace Kelly winning) was the great robbery since the Brinks Job!"
