On Sunday, two underrated and at times, seemingly under-appreciated basketball players put on a heck of a show in NBA action. Ironically, the players are both point guards, play on underachieving teams in the NBA Atlantic and have been the subject of constant trade rumors.
New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams, formerly of the Utah Jazz, led his team to victory over the woeful Charlotte Bobcats. Williams scored a franchise-high 57 points, reminding fans why the Nets traded for him in the first place. He's received a lot of criticism for not leading the team to a better record (12-26), but the talent around him is nowhere near All-Star worthy. Williams will be a free agent after this season.
Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo may have actually stolen Williams' thunder, banking in a triple double against the tough New York Knicks. Rondo's final totals for the game he led his team to win in overtime were 18 points, 20 assists, and a career-high 17 rebounds. According to ESPN.com and Elias Sports Bureau, the last player to have at least 17 in each category was the legendary Magic Johnson in 1989.
While the Celtics are 19-17 and probably headed to the playoffs, the Nets are going in the opposite direction. Whether they're with their respective teams may be uncertain until the 2012-2013 season, make no mistake about it: Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo are great point guards playing at a high level. Who was the more impressive player on Sunday? Well, that's for you to decide.
