My all time favorite followed by labyrinth, the goonies, the secret of nimh, beauty and the beast, the rescuers, a bug's life, mary poppins, finding nemo, princess mononoke, bridge to terabithia and the iron giant.
The dark crystal.....That movie has haunted me day and night sense the day I saw it.....NEVER again shall i ever watch that horrid movie. I'll stick with OMG I could have chosen the Rescuers! NOOOOO
Though by no means is Princess Mononoke a kid's movie. I wish people would quit assuming that because it's animated it's automatically made "for kids". This movie has tons of horrible, bloody deaths by limb loss and decapitation...sound like a kid movie to you?
For me, it was the greatest. Try looking past the gruesome and think "What about it's meaning? Those secrets to life?" These lessons can be very influential to a child's life in a very positive way, and the problem of maturity that you brought up -- well that stuff doesn't stick. Maybe it was because I was a creative and intelligent kid (I was aware at the age of 4 that Santa couldn't possibly exist, despite deceiving me so) and I could understand what the death meant; I understood the meaning behind it rather than simply mindless stimulation. Even children that aren't that creative, those that need auditory and visual fulfillment won't think about the moral implications that such a movie presents. But still, perhaps Spirited Away might be more appropriate.
I can totally get what you're saying, and the message for the film is amazing. But I went and saw it at an anime club meant for teens and adults, but people still brought their kids with them.
BET THAT!
'Woah.'
And just for the record, IMO, Bridge to Terabithia is the most horrid movie ever made.
