Don't think it matters that much as long as they can sing.
Which most of them can.
No bloody auto tune please it is destroying the very soul of music.
Imagine Dusty, Janis, Karen or Mama Cass on auto tune would rather put my Jack Russell on Speed.

I would have to go with Mezzo-soprano. Most female pop stars are middle sopranos or half sopranos like madonna and Whitney Houston, there are few Soprano superstars out there like Mariah Carey and Cindy Lauper

I once thought Lady Gaga was a Soprano but unfortunately she is an Alto/Contralto. she has a low singing voice in a higher tone quality which makes it sound Sopranish/Mezzo like. you can check out her correct vocal range at www.divadevotee.com

the soprano voice tends to lend itself to more formal singing. The Alto is more pop and jazz...which is today's culture
