London didn't blow me away, but for me, China was all yawns. The drummers were cool, but it didn't do anything special for me.

Overall China was superior in terms of technology and sheer commitment of the people. However, they have so many people, that cannot be compared equally with London.

London's opening was more like a concert then an Olympics opening ceremony. My favorite was Greece.

Eh. Never watched the China Olympics so can't say what's better. London's was okay, but felt a little...theatrical? Maybe that's why the Queen looked a little bored.

But the ending with the Olympic rings being "molded" into the air was awesome! The flares coming out made it look like it was dripping hot, melted metal.

I was really disappointed in the Opening Ceremonies for Great Britain. It was, for the most part, plain boring.

I don't remember who said this : the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic is so grand that he don't think any country in the future can top it.
China also wanted to demonstrate to the world of their wealth and power among the nations and show how far they came since the cultural revolution.

It is estimated that the Chinese government spent over $50,000,000,000 USD on the Olympics, that is tough to beat.

I don't think anyone noticed, but this ceremony reflected the whole history, and revolution. Besides, the idea of the torch was a lot more original and beautiful.

The bizarre tribute to Socialized Medicine with dancing nurses, was freaky at best. Considering the nursing care is so poor. A man died in a London hospital last March of dehydration because the nurses didn't bother give him water. He was bed ridden so he could not do so himself. He even called the police, and the nurses shooed them away.

The problems caused by the NHS are legion. As a result of the long waits to gain care, patients have instead started to purchase treatment themselves, even going abroad to receive care (heh heh, yeah here). Access and quality of care are at the bottom of the scale, and rationing of services has led to discrimination against the elderly. As with any government-run system, more wealthy citizens have a higher level of access within the system, and are much abler to obtain a higher quality of care than others. It is thus that the NHS has led to increased inequality in medical care received by Britons. You would think it's not exactly Olympic opening fodder. This opening was just propaganda and freaky bizarre.

Beijing set the bar extremely high, but I thought London delivered and then some.

Then again, I might be a bit biased because I was able to understand what was being sung. ;)

Your logic: Someone doesn't like it!?!? Probably didn't watch it.

It was... I don't know how to describe it... too traditional? It was alright, I'm not saying it was bad, I liked the traditional bits and shows how prepared they were...but It didn't get me excited at all.

And obviously it's being talked about PURELY because it's the Olympics again, people are going to naturally compare the two ceramonies. Not because Bejing was "SO AMAZING". You seem a little upset or weirdly enough supprised that someones not a fan of it. Fact is noone is going to like the same thing, there's allsorts of different opinions...

I'm not saying everyone had to like it. I'm simply saying not recognizing the originality of it by calling it boring seems misplaced.

Well I was living in China during the time, I was in Shanghai though, not Beijing. Yet I could barely watch the ceremony from my TV considering all the fireworks and celebrations that were taking place in Shanghai that night, quite chaotic but it certainly added to the atmosphere.

For China the Olympics meant something so much more too, it was considered for many a sign that they were finally leaving their dark past behind and welcoming the world into their country. I haven't seen the Chinese that excited about anything before.

Of course they have some civil rights, just not the protection they should be guaranteed. China has gotten better and is getting better. Many patriotic Chinese people are taking a stand against the old government policies, I see a brighter future ahead for the Chinese people.

Also this question wasn't about the civil rights, it was about which show was more impressive.

The London one was more chaotic. That and they had American movies/TV clips thrown in. REALLY? That and the 2 "modern" teenage kids segment was really stupid.
