When Is a Band Too Old to Rock?

Shawn Amos 2010/05/18 00:10:18
The new reissue of "Exile on Main St." is instructive for any self-respecting rock wonk and manna for all the Stones junkies out there (the ten bonus tracks — including the perfect mid-tempo "Plundered My Soul" — will give hardcore fans months of new musical fodder to chew on). Most importantly, it just rocks in a way little else has in the years since. But do bands like the Stones have it in them to create new masterpieces?

When you lower them into their graves... or when they decide they've had enough.

Never. Ever. Ever. Like Steven Tyler said, he'll quit making music when his face falls off. That's not going to be anytime soon!

When they physically cannot lift their instruments anymore. As long as you do it until you die, you always will rock!

As long as they still have their talent and can perform a good live show then you are not to old to rock.

I don't want to pick an age, but...

When your band-mate is having a hip replacement, you're too old to rock.
When you take your teeth out at night, you're too old to rock.
When your age is four times that of your groupies - and they're legal - you're too old to rock.
You're too old to rock once you get a lifetime achievement award. It means people are in a hurry to recognize you before you're in the dirt.
If your first new car had seatbelts as an option, you're too old to rock.
If your greatest hits was ever offered as a record album, cassette, and 8-track, you're too old to rock.
If you remember Woodstock, you're too old to rock.
If you have begun to forget Woodstock, you're far FAR too old to rock.
When you wake up in the morning and realize how thankful you are for the love of your third wife and grand-kids, you need to realize something - that you are too old to rock.
If your band is mentioned in 2 out of 5 "too old to rock" lists, you're too old to rock.
if you ever wonder if you're too old to rock - yes, yes you are too old to rock.
If you have to change songs around because you can't hit notes, you're too old to rock.
If you ever played Vegas, you're either too old to rock or don't rock as much as you think.
By the time you're making more money from your investments than from the sales of your music... friend... listen to me. YOU are too old to rock.

I don't think simply knowing about something is an issue, though. Unless you know about it because you were alive at the time and watching it happen on the news. In which case it's time to put the KISS replica double-neck AXE guitar down... and slowly step away from the stage. :)

I think when the band itself thinks its too old to perform, that's when they are too old. However, they can still contribute to the music industry until they die. Just look at some of the great country guitarists who the young ones wanted them in on their sessions. I think if you are truly talented in the music field, you will never retire or be put out to pasture.

Creativity doesn't dissappear with age, in fact it only gets more mature. I will admit though, the ideas come slower :D

The Rolling Stones have reinvented themselves before and always stayed on top. They can still fill any venue, in short order !

Yes, people can still be creative when they become seniors. We saw The Who during the Super Bowl, those geezers rocked. Musicians have been able to create new music into their senior years.

If you're a true rocker, you're never too old to rock.
Unless of course you lose your talent...such as Whitney Houston. (who of course is not a rockstar)

When they get too old to play them. I took my wife to see Elton John and Billy Joel, and while both of them can still play the hell out of a piano, Elton didn't sound great to great, Billy Joel had to sing a lot of the harder notes of Sir Elton's songs. Great concert though, too many good songs not to be.

A band is never to old to rock! Some of our great band legends are gone, but their music lives on!
