When Is a Band Too Old to Rock?

Shawn Amos 2010/05/18 00:10:18
The new reissue of "Exile on Main St." is instructive for any self-respecting rock wonk and manna for all the Stones junkies out there (the ten bonus tracks — including the perfect mid-tempo "Plundered My Soul" — will give hardcore fans months of new musical fodder to chew on). Most importantly, it just rocks in a way little else has in the years since. But do bands like the Stones have it in them to create new masterpieces?

I think a band is too old to rock when 3/4 of the original band members are dead. As long as they haven't changed their style and they sound the same, I say its all good.

No one is ever too old to rock. If one can rock, then rock he shall all the way to the grave.

The art of music has no boundaries, no borders, no race, no culture and no age....I would say, the band plays on till one is planted or people stop listening.

Why wouldn't they? all great artists and inventors achieved some great things in their golden years.

I don't know who these "Stones" are, but musicians do eventually lose their touch and their creativity. Singers lose their wind or their voice sooner or later. Instrumentalists eventually can't hit the notes or perform the riffs that made them famous.

Having said that, most musicians are better in their 60s than they were in their 20s.

It's painful to watch any performer on the downslide, so it's time to hang it up when your skills begin to decline.

I've probably heard some of their songs on the radio, but never knew what band was playing them or the names of the band members. Mick Jagger sounds familiar.
