Maybe the other competitors would have benefited from special equipment, as well.

I can't believe how stupid some of these answers are. Of COURSE it didn't give him an advantage - he came last!
I'm a disabled person and he's a real inspiration to me. He worked and fought hard to get where he did - OK it probably didn't go the way he would've wanted it to go but he did what he set out to do - compete in the Olympics.
And now, he can be fully warmed up for the Paralympics. Good luck to him for that...

I was pulling for him. Now I don't think he is going to win. But he has proven he could be an Olympian. An that is good with me

A-n-y-o-n-e who makes it to the Olympics should be congratulated ... Mr Pistorius deserves an extra accolade or two.

This is the guy that I am cheering for in both of those events, even though I am red-blooded American all the way. His story is amazing, and I hope more people have the guts to transfer from the Para- to the regular Olympics.

This would have been my first post

    What!?

A man with no legs running the olympics?

Shouldn't he stay home and live on governemtn disability like a lot of Dems say he should?

    How uppity is that?

I don't know what to say! Millions of dollars have been spent on perfecting the running shoe and no one complained. I imagine that the kind of gear worn by the amputee's can be improved and maybe perform better than shoes. I don't know the answer.

It feels good as a human being to see that this guy is competing. Is it fair? Again, I don't know. May the best most qualified man win!

You should've given us more options! I'm not pleased, and I'm not indifferent; I object to his appearance in the normal Olympics. He's using mechanical equipment to improve his performance; if anyone else did that' they wouldn't be allowed to compete. Why not let people use a motorcycle, in that case?
If he wins a medal, he will turn the result into a joke!

This IS a tough one, isn't it. I agree with you but I just don't know what the answer is. It looked like, in the pictures, that he got great thrust from his equipment. Spring action....so that seems unfair, Tough decision.

I watched him last night - he was amazing. There was no up/down spring action and he had to throw his 'legs' from his hip in a semi-swivel motion. He was expending much more energy that the others. He had not 'extra help' - he earned his place. Outstanding performance.

Yeah. I think people are frightened of saying anything against him, because he's disabled. But these races are about people giving it their all, without any assistance! If someone isn't naturally a runner, they shouldn't be allowed to use special equipment!
Disabled people already have their own Olympics.

Special Olympics are for the developmentally disabled, the Paralympics are for the physically disabled. This is a tough one. He does have a handicap that he has spent years working to overcome. I give him props and support him, I don't think those legs give him any advantage so much as help to enable him to compete at all!

I have plenty of admiration for Pistorius. He's a fine athlete, and he has guts. But no one should be allowed to compete in the Olympics with an artificial advantage over their opponents.

Yeah, apart from having mechanical legs! Jesus! Why not let him drive a sports car round the track? It's not his body that's winning the races! It's the equipment he uses.

I realized how right you are in the first sentence. Yes, I think I was afraid to say anything derogatory about this unfortunate young man. It wasn't conscious, it was just in the back of my mind.

Sure, right after they cut off their legs. I watched him last night - he was amazing. There was no up/down spring action and he had to throw his 'legs' from his hip in a semi-swivel motion. He was expending much more energy that the others. He had not 'extra help' - he earned his place. Outstanding performance.

I saw a guy on a motorcycle this morning-- zoomed down the street . Absolutely amazing! He should be in the Olympics next time. I'll bet he could beat every sprinter on the field.

OK... if not a motorcycle, how about special shoes of some sort? Where do you draw the line when you allow one athlete to bring special equipment onto the field?
