Bad news, "Guitar Hero" fans. Activision announced on Thursday that it will stop manufacturing the game that once gave you an excuse to pretend you were Slash.

"Guitar Hero" -- which originally was only available on Sony's PlayStation consoles -- became a big hit soon after its launch in 2005, earning a rockin' $1.7 billion in just three years, NPR reports.

Activision produced many versions of the game, including Metallica, Aerosmith and Van Halen. But sales peaked in 2008, and the fad appears to be fizzling out.

Meanwhile, "Rock Band" sales are also down, while "Call of Duty and" "World of Warcraft" are still raking in the dough -- implying, sadly, that music is out -- and war is in.

From "World of Warcraft" to "Super Mario Bros." to "Grand Theft Auto," click through our slideshow and let us know: What's the most enduring video game of all time?

I like them but I just think they should take a break. Give it a year or two, release a new series then go back to Final Fantasy. It's been completely overkilled if you ask me.

They will run it until it is dead. They have some good ideas that could be incorporated into other games, and I do agree with you that they should do something else, and maybe come back in time....

Tetris. 25 years later it's still the exact same game. Everyone plays it. It's still in the top 25 games in the Apple app store. Every phone I've had since phones supported games has had Tetris installed on it at some point.

either call of duty or halo. you can't beat the classics, but i know A LOT of people who will throw away time from their life and all their money to play these two games. (ok, i do it too. but these games are sick!)

Mario freaking drives me crazy! Especailly when you kick a turtle shell by mistake and then it comes back to kill you. Or when you go through Wario's layer and you're climbing on the chain fence and get hit with a stupid firer ball! You have no idea how many time I've gone through that! A lot of temper tantrums came from me in the 90's over that game!

But right now it's anything sims. I don't play "Call of Duty", "WOW" or "GTA". I play this game for countless hours trying to get my kid in private school, my wife a promotion, and trying to keep my husband from cheating on my wife with some floozy down the street! Let's just say that I have played Sims for 12 hours straight....SMH that game is AMAZING!
wife floozy street played sims 12 straight smh game Sims 3

I would say that its the final fantasy series... although I am not a fan of it, the game has continued to keep a fan base that doesn't go away... as for the game that has stayed alive the longest? World of Warcraft... another game that I don't really like but it is still going and is a phenomenon unlike any other game.

    Warcraft deathwing

Normally I wouldn't vote for such a new game, but WoW has 12 million subscribers...and they don't even expand into consoles -- that's purely PC Gaming which normally falls behind the PS3, the Wii, etc. And, with the intricacies of the game, they can pretty much do whatever they want and continue expanding for quite a long time. Plus, it's addictiveness is legendary. People have died playing WoW because they couldn't get off the game...hard to beat that!

It's also enduring in that it's a continuation of the earlier Warcraft series - also as addictive as hell. I remember sitting in an uncomfortable wicker chair in front of our ridiculously slow Macintosh desktop as a little girl and killing humans whenever possible.

Even at age 6 I was glued to the screen for hours at a time. World of Warcraft is not only enduring, it is addictive and influential. Although even I have to find it amusing when people correct my knowledge of Zandalar with their own superior knowledge... lol.

Aaaaaaand again we have an "opinion poll" that really isn't, due to the specific wording. Most enduring? As in, which video game (series) will best stand the test of time?

Well, let's look at birthdates: Mario has been around since the primal days of Donkey Kong, back in 1981; the first GTA didn't come about until 1997; and Guitar Hero is practically a baby born in 2005

Mario is 30 years old. GTA is 14. Guitar Hero is 6

2005 mario 30 years gta 14 guitar hero 6 mario bros antimated gif

(That being said, I'm a big fan of Link from the Zelda series, but come what may.)

Has to be Pac Man. It's still around in some shape or form. Sometimes on cell phones.
