Despite being criticized for being too violent, "Grand Theft Auto" is still hugely popular, with "Grand Theft Auto IV" selling 17 million copies since its debut.

Bad news, "Guitar Hero" fans. Activision announced on Thursday that it will stop manufacturing the game that once gave you an excuse to pretend you were Slash.

"Guitar Hero" -- which originally was only available on Sony's PlayStation consoles -- became a big hit soon after its launch in 2005, earning a rockin' $1.7 billion in just three years, NPR reports.

Activision produced many versions of the game, including Metallica, Aerosmith and Van Halen. But sales peaked in 2008, and the fad appears to be fizzling out.

Meanwhile, "Rock Band" sales are also down, while "Call of Duty and" "World of Warcraft" are still raking in the dough -- implying, sadly, that music is out -- and war is in.

As much as I'd love to say Tomb Raider I'd have to agree with below and say Assassins Creed. It took me about 5 days to complete all 4 in a marathon. (I'd completed them all before)

zelda for sure it was created on the oldest game system still manufactured, meaning the name, and more then likely will be the last, i seriously think nintendo will outlive the rest of the system and game manufacturers

Classics such as Pong, Pacman, Asteroids, and Galactica. Those games will live on in our culture. Even with amazing titles like Halo or Call of Duty or Tom Clancy or Dead Space, World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Gears of War, etc. Those games started it all and people still find them addicting.

Annual game like Madden (since 1988) have become enduring, but Nintendo has created 2 characters that will continue to endure based on the formula

Hero + Damsel in distress / Destruction of the World + Epitome of evil + Fight between good and evil + Hero triumph = Legend
