What's the Best Sci-Fi Movie of All Time?

In honor of Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi feature "Prometheus," CelebTV has put together some of the best and worst sci-fi movies of all time. Some of the movies, like "Terminator 2," are indisputable classics. Others, like "Plan 9 From Outer Space," are so terrible they're great. Check out the clip below for some truly awful and amazing flicks.



There's plenty of bad sci-fi out there, but when it comes to good sci-fi, your options are limited. You could go with an obvious choice, like the original "Star Wars" trilogy or Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" classic; or you could go with something a little more subtle, like Scott's cult favorite "Blade Runner" or "2001: A Space Odyssey." If you don't see your favorite, feel free to write it in. The choice for best sci-fi movie is yours to make!

    I think the best sci-fi movie was the OLD "The Day the Earth Stood Still." It had an actual robot, and spaceship, and the actors were very good. I prefer the old-time movies, anyway.
    By the way, "Spaceship Troopers" wasn't too bad, except for the sex in it. That definitely wasn't part of Heinlein's original book, which was much better.!

    with the exception of "plan 9" these are all great movies. i think the original war of the worlds must be judged the best. it showed us all what amazing special efx were possible. my personal favorites are twisted sci fi stuff like galaxy quest, evolution, humanoids from the deep or buckaroo banzai........

    I love Alien, but Blade Runner came an extremely close second. I like the way all of these suggestions are different in their own way though, a very tough decision.

    I know that it's hard to include more than one film of a series, but I have to say THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is the best. I also know that these lists are designed for young people with no memory, or no sense of the past, and I guess that's okay... but THE FIFTH ELEMENT? Really? That just seems like such an arbitrary selection, especially when there are far better sci-fi films from the 90's, like DARK CITY.

    I don't like being only able to pick one. And some how I didn't see Star Wars... even so, I was tossed between Blade Runner, Avatar & Fifth Element. Now, if you want to say best 3D Movie of all time... Nothing I have seen comes even close to Avatar. And the most Messed up "Directors Cut" Definitely goes to Blade Runner. The Euro Theatrical Release was by far the best cut of that movie. And No, Decker Was Not A Replicant! Read the Book if that is your argument on Blade Runner Theatrical vs Directors Cut... plus its just not the same without Ford's Narration or the Sunset Ending. But, of them All... the Fifth Element is the Film that you will watch over and over and over and over again. And still see stuff you missed before.

    "Blade Runner" is a very close second.

    "Star Wars" was fun but awful Science Fiction. "Aliens" (Alien 2) was better than Alien. "Terminator" was better than "Terminator 2".

    If we're talking about film series then the Star Wars trilogies are the best. As individual movies go, Terminator 2 is the best of the ones listed here.

    The original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "The Thing from Another Planet" directed by Howard Hawks. Terminator 2 didn't even bother to try to make an attempt to fill the huge plot hole it created,when the inventor of the chip that was the source for the machines taking over in the future was killed before he could create the chip,and the two terminators were destroyed as well. so when Arnold went off into oblivion in the vat of molten steel,John Connor ( Edward Furlong) should have faded along with him. That's the major trouble with using time travel as a plot device in a movie. Donnie Darko is one of the few movies that I've seen that neatly resolved the problem that time travel seems to cause in movies.

    The Terminator movies use alternate timelines; they don't do "fading" like Back to the Future does.

    Speaking of which, shouldn't BttF be on this list?

    Star Wars and Star Trek before it, brought sci fi to the main stream giving it validity that the genre sorely lacked. That's why I chose Star Wars, however, Jurassic Park was amazing, I also love Blade Runner. I also still really like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

    The daddy of them all of course! Star Wars is just so far above and beyond. Take into account that this was released back in the '70s..the special effects were ahead of it's time! Not only that, but it spawned 5 more films and who knows how much total revenue from all the different sources! Great job Mr. Lucas! And you deserve all the accolades you gather!

    It is hard to choose. There are a lot of good ones, but there are some real sad ones too. The bad ones almost become comedies.

    2001 set the standard for sci-fi cinema very high, and was the first not-so-distant future sci-fi story with realistic details in the production (and hasnt been exceeded in that aspect)

    Terminator 2 was spectacular for its time with the special effects and the way the bad terminator could come up out of the floor; go thru the steel gates and all that stuff. He made the movie. I always thought The Fifth Element was fun and humorous as well.
