SLIDESHOW: What's the Best Political Protest Song?

"Born in the USA" (Bruce Springsteen)
1 of 8

"Born in the USA" (Bruce Springsteen)

The Boss' 1984 song is about the effects of the Vietnam War on Americans, but it's often misinterpreted as patriotic. Springsteen famously asked Ronald Reagan to stop using the song in his reelection campaign.

  2. "Yes We Can" (will.i.am)

    "Yes We Can" (will.i.am)

Obama may be on the rocks now, but in 2008, Black Eyed Pea will.i.am made a song out of his popular slogan. Obama, what "can" you do now?

  3. "Won't Get Fooled Again" (The Who)

"Won't Get Fooled Again" (The Who)

The 1971 single's lyrics speak for themselves: "I tip my hat to the new constitution/Take a bow for the new revolution." In other words, the new regime looks a lot like the old one: "Meet the new boss/Same as the old boss."

  4. "Fight the Power" (Public Enemy)

    "Fight the Power" (Public Enemy)

The hip-hop group has said the 1989 song "is not about fighting authority ... it’s about fighting abuse of power." Couldn't this very well be this year's Tea Party anthem?

  5. "Ohio" (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

"Ohio" (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

Neil Young wrote this 1970 protest song in response to the Kent State shootings on May 4 of that year.

  6. "Give Peace a Chance" (John Lennon)

"Give Peace a Chance" (John Lennon)

The 1969 single was written during Lennon's famous "Bed-In" with Yoko Ono, and became the anthem of the anti-Vietnam War movement.

  7. "War" (Edwin Starr)

    "War" (Edwin Starr)

What's it good for? Absolutely nothing! At least according to Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, who wrote the anti-Vietnam War protest song in 1969. Edwin Starr took it to No. 1 in 1970.

  8. "Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)" (The Byrds)

"Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)" (The Byrds)

Pete Seeger's 1959 song was adapted from the Bible's Book of Ecclesiastes. It's often used as a plea for world peace, due to the line, "a time for peace, I swear it's not too late." The Byrds made it a hit in 1965.

What's the Best Political Protest Song?
You!
Add Photos & Videos
Did you vote in Tuesday's election? If so, you might have had the lyrics to "Born in the U.S.A." running through your head.

But if you're on the right side of the political aisle, you might want to think again before downloading the Bruce Springsteen song. The Boss famously asked Ronald Reagan to stop using it during his 1984 reelection campaign.

Perhaps The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" better suited your mood as you headed off to the polls? Or Public Enemy's "Fight the Power"?

Obama loyalists may still be whistling will.i.am.'s "Yes We Can," but we have to wonder: Obama, what "can" you do now?

In honor of Tuesday's colorful midterm elections, click through our slideshow and let us know: What's the best political protest song of all time?

    "There's something happenin' here;
What it is, ain't exactly clear.
There's a man with a gun over there,
Telling me I've got to beware...

    I think its time we...
    Stop, children,
    What's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down...

    There's battle lines being drawn
    Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
    Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
    Singing songs and carrying signs

Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down

    PARANOIA strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
IT STARTS WHEN YOU'RE ALWAYS AFRAID
You step out of line, the man come, and take you away..."

    Leaders leave the stage
To end a long dark age
Move like puppets on a string.
    And the world is suffering
The world is not what you see
But truth will set you free
You don't get peace by fighting wars
Let us make a stand and heal the scars

Refr: Hope comes in the dark
    Just ignite that spark
    The future will be bright
    After dark, comes the light
    Now it's time to act
To make a stand and seal the pact
And our future could be bright
'Cause I can see the light

    The world is changing fast
    Freedom will come at last
    It's crystal clear to see
So leave the powers that be
'cause fear and terror is their game
They rule the world without shame
You don't get peace by fighting wars
Let us make a stand and heal the scars

    Refrein
Now it's the time to awake
For you and me and our children's sake

    Mister Blue
Words and Music by Tom Paxton

    (pertinent to today)

Good morning Mister Blue, we've got our eyes on you.
The evidence is clear, that you've been scheming.
You like to steal away and while away the day.
You like to spend an hour dreaming.
What will it take, to whip you into line?
    A broken heart?
    A broken head?
    It can be arranged.
    It can be arranged.

Step softly Mister Blue, we know what's best for you.
We know where your precious dreams will take you.
You've got a slot to fill, and fill that slot you will.
You'll learn to love it, or we'll break you.
Oh, what will it take, to whip you into line?
    A broken heart?
    A broken head?
    It can be arranged.
    It can be arranged.

Be careful Mister Blue this phase you're going through,
Can lead you nowhere else, but to disaster.
Excuse us while we grin, you've worn our patience thin.
It's time to show you who's your master.
What will it take, to whip you into line?
    A broken heart?
    A broken head?
    It can be arranged.
    It can be arranged.

Don't worry Mister Blue, we'll take good care of you.
Just think of it as sense and not surrender.
But never think again, that you can think again,
Or you'll get something you'll remember.
What will it take to whip you into line?
    A broken heart?
    A broken head?
    It can be arranged.
    It can be arranged.
    ...

Locking Up The Sun-Poets of The Fall.
They aren't American, but this song does have serious political roots.

They're locking up the sun, the light of reason gone,
n' hope has been succesfully undone
The question's burning on, where is it coming from,
no-one seems to know the monster born

It's a bad trip on a sinking ship, when no-one seems responsible
Scapegoat to rock the boat, yeah, we need someone expendable
Volunteers to face the fears, can we be sensible
And find a way to break the fall, find out the cure for all

Is there a hero somewhere, someone who appears and saves the day
Someone who holds out a hand and turns back time
Is there a hero somewhere, someone who will never walk away
Who doesn't turn a blind eye to a crime

They're locking up the sun, they have their chosen one,
you know this time they'll make him play along
They're taking to the arms, the fathers and their sons,
there's nowhere left to run and hide

It's a bad trip on a sinking ship, when no-one seems responsible
Scapegoat to rock the boat, yeah, we need someone expendable

    Blowing in the Wind
    Mr. Jones
    We Shall Overcome
    This Land Is Your Land
And every word Woody Guthrie ever wrote. Woody Guthrieblowing wind jones overcome land land woody guthrie wrote

Here are some verses Woody included over the years.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

    It also has a verse:

Nobody living can ever stop me,
    As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

    In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?

the best political protest song is the first American political protest song - "Yankee Doodle" ... while the British supporters sang this song to make fun of American colonists, the rebellious colonsits took it up and sang it themselves as a matter of pride! ... it was like saying to the British troops that they may have thought the Americans to be the butt of jokes before, but now they could see the Americans were NOTHING TO LAUGH ABOUT! ... that kind of smartassedness is purely and beautifully American!

How about Bob Dylan's 1963 "Masters of War"

    Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
    You that hide behind walls
    You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

    You that never done nothin'
    But build to destroy
    You play with my world
    Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
    When the fast bullets fly.

    Like Judas of old
    You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
    You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
    That runs down my drain.

    You fasten all the triggers
    For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
    You hide in your mansion'
    As young people's blood
    Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

    You've thrown the worst fear
    That can ever be hurled
    Fear to bring children
    Into the world
    For threatening my baby
    Unborn and unnamed
    You ain't worth the blood
    That runs in your veins.

    How much do I know
    To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
    You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
    Though I'm younger than you
    That even Jesus would never
    Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one quest...

    Is your money that good
    Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
    I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
    All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
    And your death'll come soon
    I will follow your casket
    In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
    Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

    Pink: Dear Mr. President

    "Dear Mr. President"
    (feat. Indigo Girls)

    Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
    You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
    Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
    And tell me why?

    Dear Mr. President,
    Were you a lonely boy?
    Are you a lonely boy?
    Are you a lonely boy?
    How can you say
    No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you 'bout hard work
    ...

Minimum wage with a baby on the way

Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away

Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
    Hard work
    Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
    Hard work
    Hard work
    Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
    Dear Mr. President,
You'd never take a walk with me.
    Would you?

If you think "Won't get fooled again" is on the side of Revolution, think again. It was written from a more conservative perspective.

None of those songs have much to do with now. I like "Shutting down Detroit" by John Rich. "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" by Toby Keith.
