IMHO, The Sting, Close Encounters, Star Wars....all for different reasons. The Sting because it was very well made. Close Encounters because of its cultural impact. Star Wars because it opened the technological doors to movie making.
The best movie and my all time favorite, a total classic, The Godfather! Of course, the 70's was a banner decade for movies and music. We haven't come close since!
Dark Star - This movie is the Rosetta Stone of space comedy. Red Dwarf would never have happened if this movie were never made. It also explores the subjects of isolation and the reason why it is a dumb idea to give weapons artificial intelligence.
The Taking Of Pelham 123 - The original and the best. This is the grittiest heist movie of the decade. It is dark and moody, refusing to hide behind any Hollywood gloss.
Assault On Precinct 13 - Ever wondered what it would be like to be in a police station under siege? Wonder no more. This movie's theme tune was also the inspiration for the sound track for Xenon 2. One of the most popular games sold on the Amiga and Atari ST - though the game did get criticised for it's crap ending.
