It was probably one of the Dick and Jane books they had all us first graders start with. The first book I actually remember reading just for fun, and loving it, was called High Country Adventure. I still think about that book to this day, and I believe I have a copy in my sizable book collection.

The McGuffey Second Eclectic Reader...... My Nana started reading to me as early as I can remember, I was reading The McGuffey Second Eclectic Reader with help at 3 and a half, alone by 4 and a half, and reading Sandmannlein ist gekommen (The Sandman is coming) in German by the age of 6. I still have both books to this day. By the time I started first grade I was reading at almost 5th grade level and almost 6th grade comprehension. UNFORTUNATELY I WAS NEVER THAT ADVANCED AT MATH, or I would have probably never repeated the second grade, and been a miserable failure at all forms of math.

I can't tell you the name of the first picture book I read by myself, but I can tell you the name of the first longer, chapter book: It was called Betsy's Little Star, by Carolyn Haywood. Transitioning from short books to a real chapter book was a big step, so I do remember the title of the first one.
