What Was the Biggest Oscar Upset of All Time?

With "The Artist" monopolizing Oscar predictions this year, there's bound to be at least one upset. But hey, that's how it goes. The Academy Awards are usually pretty accurate, but with 83 years under its belt, it's bound to kick up dust now and again. That's not to say controversial wins are necessarily wrong choices, either. Sometimes they simply have to pick between two great films and risk the offense.

Take the 2002 battle for Best Picture and Best Director, for example: Roman Polanksi's "The Pianist" and Rob Marshall's "Chicago" were both excellent films by any standards. However, perhaps due to his past, Polanski's win for Best Director was considered an upset. Other upsets take some time to recognize. When "Citizen Kane" lost Best Picture in 1941 it wasn't a huge deal, but now that it's considered the greatest film of all time, the loss seems like an obscenity.

We couldn't possibly include all of the upsets that have occurred over the years, especially since so much of this is completely relative -- in fact you might disagree with some of the options -- but we put together a list of some well-known upsets and provided you with one of those coveted "Other" options. Tell us which Oscar win upset you the most!

'Citizen Kane' obviously the biggest upset, but I remember being personally peeved when Gwyneth Paltrow won Best Actress over Cate Blanchett. I don't know what those dolts were thinking. Same thing with 'The Two Towers' losing Best Picture to freaking 'Chicago.' What a joke that was (and remains).

much as I loved his characterization, the man he was playing was not what i'd call "ordinary"; but banal--absolutely! oh this is all so subjective--

Marisa Tomei got best actress that year and really ticked off a lot of people. But I think she earned it.
One who didn't earn it was Halle Barry who won best actress for Monster's Ball. Now don't get me wrong I think she's a wonderful actress but this really was a nod to the black community, not for thespian skill.

Yeah, I didn't mind that one as much, since 'Rocky' was at least a great film ('Taxi Driver' still way better, though). Peter Finch winning best actor over De Niro was the worst upset that year, in my opinion..

That Oscar pick was a shock. Of insidercourse...we are finding out this week that the Academy is 80% white men and over 62. They can in no way fairly represent the movie going public. It explains why odd off the wall films often win awards.

That was another technical breakthrough. It used to be technical breakthroughs walked away with awards. Old men at the Academy do not like horror films or comedies.

Jack Nicholson (in a sub par performance) in 1997's "As Good As It Gets" beating out Robert Duvall's towering tour-de-force performance in Duvall's directorial debut "The Apostle" for Best Actor. I still haven't forgiven the Academy for it. THAT was a crime!! Robert Duvall s The Apostle

Wayne was invariable, the same regardless of the roles...which is why they didn't vary the parts he played...in my view.

Absolutely...no holds barred...he was blowing the competition away! JC must of gotten on the wrong side of some of those who voted. I have been rebutted before it was only a great popcorn movie. But when you look at the entire film on its 3D entirety... which I doubt the Academy used to judge...it was totally awesome. The Academy has been steadily losing credibility since the year they snubbed The Color Purple.

Lets be honest here. Avatar was just an overrated reimagining of pocahontas with a rediculous amount of CGI (Which is rubbish) and special effects, it deserved nothing. To be fair it might have been the only bad movie made, but its the award is for how good the movie was, not how much you like the director.

Do you know who does that? . . . The flakes in Hollywood, themselves. They are the ones who vote on themselves. That's why I never pay any attention to what they are doing. Suppose Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Maxine Waters, would all pick out a favorite amongst them? . . . Would you care?

    Yeah, 'Munich' too!
'Crash' and 'Brokeback Mountain' were more emotion-driven films (still good), while Spielberg defied the frequent criticism of his films being overly sentimental, and what does the Academy do? They give it to one of the sentimental films.

►► ?? Re: 'Citizen Kane' as the greatest movie of all time... please. ---- Maybe to film school professors looking for a way to demonstrate every concievable way to use black and white film to cover bad makeup, bad writing, and bad acting. As a text for film school students it's great, but as an entertaining movie for which to buy a ticket... no way, it's junk. A perfect illustration if why you should not do something just because you can.
